You should have a pool of money — in relatively liquid form — that you can access in a pinch. So that is why personal finance tip #8 is:
Build an emergency fund.
There are many different ways that people do this. The Digerati Life has a classic post on the different options for emergency funds, and an evaluation of each, that I find quite helpful.
