Movie Rentals Coming to YouTube

Right now, there are a ton of ways to rent a movie. You can head to Blockbuster, go to a RedBox kiosk, rent through your cable box — the list goes on. According to a report by the Associated Press, another option may be on the way. YouTube, the streaming online video service that is owned by Google, may soon add the option to rent movies.

YouTube Partners Up With Time Warner

The massively popular video service website YouTube has signed a deal with media company Time Warner Inc. that will allow YouTube to feature exclusive program clips from several of Time Warner’s cable networks. The move will allow YouTube to increase the number of clips beside which the website can sell advertising in an effort to become profitable.

YouTube May Soon Become Profitable

Google purchased YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006, but the internet search giant has struggled with its attempts to turn the mega-popular video-sharing website profitable. However, Google CFO Patrick Pichette stated today that he expects YouTube to finally bring in a profit despite overwhelming analyst opinions echoing the contrary.
YouTube has experienced a surge in branded advertisements as more and more advertisers opt to run their ads alongside related videos. Google, YouTube almost in the Clear

Google seems to be a lightning rod for legal disputes nowadays, most recently coming into the legal limelight because of its ambitious book database project. However, Google, as well as its popular video-sharing website YouTube.com, have been absolved of several damages claims in several copyright infringement cases.
This ruling, however, only applies to U.S. damages claims, leaving the possibility wide open for foreign copyright holders to claim damages from Google. Viacom Inc. had made a case earlier against Google for similar damage claims but the judge rules then as he ruled now, barring all claims.

Disney’s Hulu Deal Hurts YouTube

Disney’s new deal with Hulu to put their ABC shows on the site may hurt YouTube, which is owned by Google and has a revenue-sharing busines model, reports The Wall Street Journal. Google has felt pressure over the last several months to add better content to YouTube.
Disney’s deal with Hulu gives the site the right to distribute ABC’s content in exchange for a 30% stake in the company. Hulu already has deals with NBC and News Corp, which owns Fox. Coca-Cola’s Europe division for Sprite is delving deep into social media with an an interactive YouTube channel called Green Eyed World. In attempt to capitalize on the teenage market, this campaign features two very popular aspects of teenage life — social networking and music.

YouTube is making a move to add more full-length TV shows and movies to its website. Now available at YouTube.com/shows are a number of full-length options brought to you by a number of different studios including Lions Gate, CBS, National Geographic, Discovery and Sony.
While other video services on the internet have concentrated on full-length programs, YouTube has been known for its shorter, user uploaded videos.
