Thinking About Goals, Efficiency, Tracking Time and Other Stuff

Kristen King, over at Inkthinker has set a goal of earning $100,000 in 2008 with her writing. Part of her method is aiming at getting more efficient and she refers to my Time Tracking post a couple of years ago.
Her desire to become “more efficient” kind of made me uncomfortable. Now, I know Kristen and she’s a consummate professional, good at writing, and at running her business. She’s creative, honest, and heck, does a great job. She also makes it clear in her post that what she’s exploring is how she actually spends her time.

Beyond the Book

Just Make Money Online points to a podcast where Jason Van Orden tells how he makes $70,000 a year with his podcasts and blogs. So I ran up freerice.com
It’s excellent, if not earth shaking marketing advice. But it got me thinking…
In today’s market there’s a whole lot more you can do with the content of a book than just write a book! Obvious? Sort of, but for me, at least, I tend to forget about things like podcasts and online video… mostly because I don’t use them much. But lots of people do, and I’m not meeting those people where …read more
Kindle Dust Still Settling

There’s still lots of talk about Amazon’s Kindle.
For example, if:book talks about how the dollars might work for ebooks in a post called: kindle maths 101
Mashable talks about the problems with wireless, the Kindle and certain parts of the country in Moving To Montana? Forget About Your Kindle!
Then there are all sorts of sites that claim to offer ways to break into the digital rights management part of Kindle, some acknowledging copyright breaks, others just assuming it’s okay.
We’re closer to a breakthrough on ebooks and ebook readers imo, but we’re not quite there et.

A Kindle Review I Like

The day before Thanksgiving I posted about Amazon’s new ebook reader. There’s lots of buzz around the blogasphere, a lot of which makes little sense to me. However, Michael S. Hyatt, President CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers and writer of the blog From Where I Sit has reviewed the device in a post called: Kindle: First Impressions.
First of all, unlike many, including me, he’s actually used one, and pretty extensively. That helps. He observes that the Kindle is more like a bookstore than an ebook reader – interesting thought, that – a bookstore I can take with me.
Then he details …read more
Is Print Dead?

Joe Wikert has an interview with Print Is Dead (both a book and a blog name) author Jeff Gomez. It covers a lot, including:
Ebooks are too much like print books
Questions (and some answers) about pricing
Some speculation about what we, as authors, should be doing about all this
If you’ve got any interest at all in writing books or ebooks, I strongly suggest you study this interview.

The Inside Scoop from Book Editor Terry Whalin

Joe Wikert of Publishing 2020 pointed to an excellent resource in his blog post today. The source is Terry Whalin and his credits include over 60 books and time as an acquisitions editor for a publisher. Today he’s an agent with his own literary agency.
Whalin offers a free report called Straight Talk from the Editor: 18 Keys to a Rejection-Proof Submission. Downloading it will get you on his newsletter, but I suspect it will be worth it, and if it isn’t, you can unsubscribe.
The report is worth the effort. Some 25 pages long, Whalin tells it like it is from …read more

What, Exactly, Is A Book?

So I’m writing this booklet called, at the moment, Getting Your Book Written – An Overview. The ideal reader is someone, writer or not, who is thinking about writing a book. As I ponder this, I decide to look up the definition of book. Here’s what I find:
First, I used Google and entered: define: book
Oh my goodness! Here are the first two definitions:
• a written work or composition that has been published (printed on pages bound together); “I am reading a good book on economics”
• physical objects consisting of a number of pages bound together; “he used a large book as a …read more
