July: A Month of Motivation

I’m officially declaring war on writer’s block, distractions, and procrastination during the month of July. Maybe it’s just me, but the summer months always seem to drag. Well, at least, they do when I’m working. I feel sluggish and uninspired. I can barely force myself to do the work I have to do to pay the bills, let alone work on fun personal projects.
I blame the sun. During the summer, there’s nothing better than sitting outside by the pool and sipping Sangria or sweet tea. Hell, I can even stay motivated to work out during the summer because it means …read more
Call for Writers: Motivation Interview
June 30, 2009 by Allison Boyer

Staying motivated is one of the hardest parts of freelance writing, in my opinion. Writer’s block. Inspiration. The desire to work and do well. Some days, the sun is shining and the pool is calling my name…and I don’t really care how many articles are left unfinished on my plate.
So, I want to know how you guys and gals stay motivated. If you have five minutes of time, I’d love to hear your answers to a little motivation and writer’s block questionnaire I’ve created. I’ll post responses here (along with links back to your website(s)) starting next month!

Writer’s Block

Gather a bunch of writers together and before long someone is apt to mention writer’s block. It’s that state where a writer wants and/or needs to write, but can’t.
On a whim I decided to search for blogs with writer’s block in their name. Sure enough, there are some, including:
The Writers’ Block – a blog about literature.
The Writers’ Block – A Public Radio station’s reading series.
The Writer’s Block Episode 10- Building rapport with clients – a podcast
The results on Google’s blog search really begin to get murky after these entries.
And, of course, I’ve also written about writer’s block in an …read more
Dumping My Deathless Prose
March 18, 2008 by Anne Wayman

Oh good grief! How often do I have to learn this lesson?
I’ve been having huge trouble with a chapter in a ghostwriting chapter. This has been going on for days. I’ve re-listened to the DVD the author sent, read the offending chapter multiple times and simply couldn’t see what was wrong. I even put it away for several days. Finally, just a few moments ago, I realized that I had to delete a whole section of my wonderful, deathless prose. There wasn’t anything wrong with the writing – it would have been easier if there had been. In fact, the …read more
Fear Is What Drives Writer’s Block
November 14, 2007 by Anne Wayman

In my not very humble opinion on the subject, it’s my belief that almost all cases of writer’s block are caused by fear.
Fear of what? Well, all sorts of things, including:
Fear of completing a book or other writing project – which is actually a fear of something else, like rejection, ridicule, or being unclear on what’s next.
Fear of exposing yourself or family situation – this usually can be solved by careful writing.
Fear of the blank page (screen) – the solution to this one is usually just to start writing something, anything.
Over time, I’ve found that most fears can be lessened …read more
