My Book Has Been Copy Edited!

I got the copy edited version of my book on writing books back. I have to tell you, I wasn’t anxious to open it; in fact, I postponed it two days. I was afraid of what I would see for two reasons.
It’s always hard to look at any criticism, even when I’m the one who asked for it.
I hired a new copy editor and wasn’t a bit sure how she’d work out.
So far I’ve been delighted. She did exactly what I asked – that is, she didn’t do any rewriting, corrected mistakes and highlighted anything that confused her. I’m …read more

Most of you who follow this blog are probably vaguely aware I’m writing a book about getting your book written. It’s designed to go with a class I’ll be teaching and I’m getting close to the end. I’ve figured out what’s wrong with the exercises and I know how I want to fix them although I haven’t done it yet.
After some soul searching I decided I have to include a chapter on marketing books, even though I don’t feel like I know much about getting books sold. So I drafted a chapter a month or two ago. Yech! I just …read more
Migraines, Writing and Fuzzy Thinking

I woke up this morning with the aura and tension in my head that means a migraine is coming on. Fortunately, even through I don’t have health insurance, I am now earning enough to be able to afford an expensive medicine that staves off the pain. I can’t tell you how grateful I am.
But, even though I’m painless, the migraine or something is still there, and it means my thinking is, well fuzzy. Maybe a better way to say it, is I can’t concentrate for more than a few minutes at a time. I was going to spend a good …read more

One of my favorite blogs about book writing is The Book Sistah. Sophfronia Scott knows her stuff, and she’s got a solid entry called How to Make Money With Your Book.
It doesn’t tell you everything about book marketing, but it sums up the basics really well. If you’ve got a book, or are thinking about one, pay attention. As Sophfronia points out, an average 7% royalty often adds up to much less than all of us hope.

Finding the ideal reader for your book is important. I just posted a new article about this called Write for Your Ideal Reader.
Although this article is aimed at book writing, the very same thing holds true for article writing, on or off the web.

Sharon Hurley Hall creator of the blog Get Paid to Write (what a concept!) pointed to 13 Breeds Of Freelancer And How To Up Your Game over at Freelance Switch.
It’s a fun, tongue mostly in cheek look at the freelance life, complete with cartoons.
I found I identified a bit with each category! How about you?
