Can a Biz Chick HomeSchool?

A few weeks ago, a business friend of mine decided that she would give homeschooling a shot IN ADDITION to her home-based business of web designing and graphics illustration. Seems that little Johnny is having some trouble in school and needs more “focused attention” so my friend decided she’s the only one who can do that. Really? Anyway, she asked me what I thought about it, and you know me…
I tried homeschooling ONCE about seven years ago when my then oldest child was in preschool and my husband got this **bright** idea that it would be neat to have homeschooled …read more

The Commodities Exchange: When Did Babysitting Hit A Premium?

Being a work at home mom, I occasionally have need of babysitting services. Especially like this upcoming weekend, my husband will be out of town and won’t be here with the children. I have to attend a Toastmaster’s Officer’s training session that will last the better part of Saturday. I’ll be away from my little ones for about six hours, and ever since my four year old tried to shave with daddy’s razor that time, I figure I’d better not leave him there, alone. OK, I’m kidding. The other kids could watch him, but still.
Nah, I think I’d better …read more
Freelancing Moms Have To Decide…

what to do with the kids once school is out! It’s almost that time for my kids here in Alabama, and with three of them, I know it’s going to an interesting (and tiresome) next couple of months around my household.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I do SOOOOO love my kids. It’s just that I find it quite difficult to conentrate when they’re around, and being a freelancing mom, I have to consider my flexible schedule since they’re going to be out for the summer. The entire summer. What can I do to make sure I still …read more

There are always reason for women in business to be motivated. One that motivated me was this awesome list compiled by Liz Strauss, one of our prolific b5′ers.

When you’re a busy professional, you have very little time for non-essential things like funny emails, water cooler chit chat and the most annoying of all – trivial phone calls! There are time when I have been bombarded with “emergency” phone calls from friends and family who thought that maybe I’d really like to know who’s doing what on the soap operas and with who. They think maybe I have some free time and could shoot the breeze with them. Now that’s funny!
Taking time out from a busy and hectic workday to unwind periodically is alright, even …read more

I love working from home. Oddly, unlike many others who dream of working from home, it was never a dream of mine; I’m a nurse – how the heck can a nurse work from home? But – life has a way of changing directions and this nurse became a telecommuting medical editor and then a freelancing self-employed writer. Who would have thought?
I can tell you who wouldn’t have thought – the people around me who know I have the attention span of a gnat. That is if a gnat even has an attention span. Who knows?
For one …read more

When Are You Going To Get A Real Job?

Shannon over at startupspark wrote this great post about other people essentially always wondering when we’re going to get a real job. Shannon’s article really **sparked** something in me that I wanted to touch on today.
The real reason, I think, that people are always questioning and doubting you is because they don’t know understand. Hence, they’re ignorant. They’re ignorant to what you do, why you do it and how in the world you get paid for it! Before I became an entrepreneuer, as the majority of us here are, I too wondered and made light of the person who was …read more
