The Definition of Insanity

The definition insanity is when you keep doing what you’ve always done and expect a different result. If you are capable of getting a job but you get fired from the jobs, something is wrong. Period. And it’s not about the people firing you. Stop for a moment and go take a look in the mirror. You are responsible for the results you get from jobs you’ve worked.
Before you get frustrated with my opening and click off the page, keep reading. Don’t get mad at me. I am attempting to get you to take a look at what is going …read more

Don’t Lie About Your Termination

If you got fired from your job, as embarrassing as it may be, DON’T LIE. It is not necessary to lie about your termination. What is more important is that you take responsibility for what happened and learn from it. Today, I got a call from a job seeker. She just got fired for the third time in 5 months.
That is a lot of firing. What is going on with this job seeker? That is the question. Why can’t she hold a job? That is a huge question and I don’t have an answer – yet. My first thought for …read more

Resignation or Termination?

If you are given a choice to leave the organization rather than be terminated, take the resignation and run! Well, before you run, do your due diligence with HR and get something in writing that shows how your employment will be coded in their system. If they code you as a termination, and you have nothing to support that it was a resignation, there is really not a lot you can do. Documentation is important when the story doesn’t match. The organization has no vested interest in your future, so don’t put yourself in the position where you have …read more

Dice Fired!

Andrew Dice Clay was the first celebrity to be terminated on Celebrity Apprentice this past Sunday. He was fired for cause. Bottom line, he used poor judgment throughout the task, beginning with his “subtle” inferences to the boss, Donald Trump, that there was no food available to the celebrities when they arrived at Trump Towers. The second nail in his coffin was his “declaration of independence.” He was his own man and he had little to no interest in working with his team. Huge mistake.
The Task: Create , Bake and Sell Cupcakes. They also had to design a mobile sales …read more

It’s An Employer’s Market

It is no longer an employee’s job market – it’s all about the employer. In this crazy economy, employers are laying people off in record numbers without a whole lot of thought and certainly no guilt or compassion. So, for those of you who are job seekers, looking for a job, hoping for a job, you have to understand that unless you can differentiate yourself from the competition you will be in the job market for a while. Unless you can market yourself as a problem solver for someones organization, rather than a problem – you will continue to be …read more

Does Character Matter in Employment?

YES, character matters! Think about that phrase – Character Matters!
I have spent a large part of this year responding to issues in and around termination. Many more people get fired today in the natural flow of an organization today than any other time in our history.
For some people, termination has come by their own poor choices. Character Matters!
For some people, a manager has chosen to fire people for no apparent reason, other than because they don’t like an individual. Character Matters!
For some people, they are not clear why they are unemployed. All they know is that they don’t have a …read more

The Importance of “I” Statements

Yesterday I had an opportunity to speak to one of my readers who is struggling to get a job in this crazy economy. As we spoke, I began to understand what was getting in her way – Here issue: She is playing the blame and shame game. The blame and shame game is when you blame someone else for your situation. In this case it was someone else’s fault for why was terminated. When I asked why? I began to hear about the supervisor and the environment in the organization. She wasn’t happy there and they, the supervisor and fellow …read more

What Do You Write On The Application… If You Were Fired?

Here is a question asked by Drew Williams, one of my readers here at Interview Chatter:
The problem I’m having is that question is asked on the application, usually an online one, and you are screened out automatically. Do I answer “no” so I can get an interview and then explain everything then? I will have already been dishonest but I have to answer question or I won’t be able to finish application?
The the simple answer is to answer “yes” to this question on an application if you have been fired. Honesty is critical to you successfully navigating the hiring process. But …read more

So, You’ve Been Fired

Is there hope for you once you’ve been fired? Or are you doomed to negative perceptions and bias because of poor performance, insubordination, personality conflicts? Are you doomed to lesser jobs?
Recovery from a termination seems like an uphill battle for job seekers who find themselves facing interview questions about their previous employer. I have been looking for solutions, practical solutions to help you get over this hurdle.
The things that are critical for you to remember as a job seeker if you have been fired are: Honesty & Accountability. It is extremely important that you tell the truth and that you take responsibility …read more
