The only thing you should fear is regret

PimpYourWork.com
Among friends, I’m known for taking chances. In work, love, and every aspect of my life. The more people tell me something is impossible, unreachable, or impractical, the more I find a way to do it – no matter how scary it is.
Because the one thing that is scarier than following your dreams is the regret you’ll face when you wake up one day and realize that you didn’t reach any of them.
When I started writing for a living, many people thought I couldn’t make it. I had some really low months where I wasn’t …read more

I’ve recently read “The 4 Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferriss, and I thought it might be a good idea to review it for Pimp Your Work. The title itself, “The 4 Hour Workweek” seems like a bold claim.  If you’ve already read it, please share your own opinions of the book in the comments.  If you haven’t read the book, feel free to go over my review to see if it’s for you.
The introduction has 3 parts including an FAQ and Tim’s personal story.  In the FAQ you’ll learn if the book applies …read more

Get your career in the fast lane. Write a book. Seriously.

Do you think that all it takes to get promotions, raises, and job offers is confined within the four walls of your office cube? The title says it all. Writing a book is a great, albeit uncommon, way to get your name and reputation out there.
Now, before you cringe while remembering how difficult your English class was, give this idea a chance. Why?
Because if you write a book on a particular subject, you’re automatically branded as an expert. It’s that simple. It shows people that you know enough about a subject to pontificate about it.
It …read more

Professional Integrity: Do You Have It?

I’ve just finished reading Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. While I may not agree with all of the ideas put forth in the book, among the things that resonated in me was the sense of professional integrity. Here’s a quote from the protagonist, Howard Roark:
“But you see, I have, let’s say, sixty years to live. Most of that time will be spent working. I’ve chosen the work I want to do. If I find no joy in it, then I’m only condemning myself to sixty years of torture. And I can find the joy only if I do my …read more

The corporate world = a bunch of chimpanzees. Really.

So, you think you’re quite evolved sitting in your workstation, checking your iPhone, and sipping a latte. Before you get too proud of how far you’ve gotten on both the corporate and evolutionary ladder, step back. You might not be as evolved as you think you are.
An article on this week’s New Scientist magazine entitled “It’s a Jungle Out There” shows that despite our office cubicles and workstations, our workplace politics aren’t any different from the politics of chimpanzees in the jungle. I happen to agree.
First, a few similarities:

Hierarchy. Both corporations and chimpanzee communities have an obvious …read more

Put on a pimpin’ show

There’s a task – a presentation, a report, it doesn’t matter – and no one wants to do it because it looks tough. You were stuck with the job. Surprisingly, because of your unique badass skills, you managed to finish the job in an hour without breaking a sweat. Do you:
a) Tell your boss about it so you’ll be rewarded for your exceptional skills, and maybe even promoted.
b) Boast to your colleagues about how quickly you finished the job, so as to lower their self esteem.
c) Sleep.
d) All of the above.
Whatever you do, don’t do (a), (b), …read more

Workplace Pimps: How to get the boss to like you

The hardest person to please is always your boss.  Befriending bosses is an art – finding ways to get close to them is hard, but at the same time you don’t want to look like you’re sucking up.  After all, when someone is higher up by a few notches on the career ladder, they tend to dismiss niceness as “brown nosing”.  Here are some ways you can get the boss to like you without messing things up in the workplace:
Find similarities.  If you haven’t talked to your boss, you need to figure out the stuff she likes.  You can …read more
