Sprint Buys IPCS for $426M

Sprint Nextel Corp has decided to purchase its affiliate iPCS Inc. for $426 million, a move that will mark the final acquisition of Sprint’s last major independent affiliate and the end to a legal battle between the two companies. Sprint’s 2005 acquisition of Nextel has led it to acquire many of its affiliates as the companies complained about the merger’s anticompetitive qualities.

Sprint to Acquire Virgin Mobile USA

In a move that signals changing ambitions on the part of Sprint, America’s third-largest cell phone service, has decided to acquire Virgin Mobile USA for $483 million in shares and cash. Virgin Mobile USA, a low-end prepaid mobile company, will allow Sprint to continue its foray into the prepaid market.
Sprint, which will post its quarterly results tomorrow, already has a prepaid network called Boost, allowing users to pay a set monthly fee in exchange for unlimited calling capability. Sprint Nextel to sell Parts of Cell Network

According to a statement released by Sprint Nextel Corp., the cellular giant plans to sell a significant portion of its cellular network in the Midwest as part of an Illinois court decision. As part of the deal, no customers will see any change in their service, and while Sprint’s financial situation will see a change, it looks to be minimal.
Nextel networks throughout Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Nebraska will eventually be sold by the company to any interested buyers. The sale came about as the result of a lawsuit from iPCS Inc., a Sprint affiliate, which claims that Sprint violated an …read more
iPhone Competitor Debuts — Palm Pre

The Palm Pre has been touted by many as the biggest competitor to the amazingly popular Apple iPhone. The Pre debuted on Saturday and though the launch was preceded with much hype, crowds were smaller than some expected.
With the iPhone launch, people formed lines and camp outside of Apple and AT&T stores for days. However with the Palm Pre, most customers arrived just before Sprint stores opened on Saturday. The Pre was also being sold at Best Buy stores, where it received a bit more attention.
