Yahoo’s upgraded web portal incorporates many new features that will hopefully increase interest in Yahoo’s website as a homepage.
One of the new features of Yahoo’s web portal allows users to embed third-party web services into their individual portals, letting users access their Facebook and Hotmail accounts directly from their Yahoo homepage. The move comes as Yahoo continues to struggle with profitability despite the fact that Yahoo.com is the …read more

Google, Yahoo’s Display Ad Competition

Google and Yahoo both dominate their respective niches of online advertisement: while Google is the undisputed leader in search advertising, Yahoo has had a significant lead as far as display ads go, which are banners and other colorful ads. However, Google, has unveiled its proposed counterpart to Yahoo’s display ad dominance, the Doubleclick Ad Exchange.

This new technology would change the way that advertisers put display ads on websites for the better, making it easier to buy and sell ad space and to control who sees their ads. Advertisers would also have greater control over where and when their ads are …read more

Yahoo Misses Analyst Estimates

Search engine giant Yahoo! Inc. has released third-quarter results that show that the company has not managed to exceed analyst expectations. Yahoo blames its underperformance on a general slowdown in advertisement spending on its websites, cutting into its revenue and resulting in a 3.9 percent fall in the value of its stocks.

While analyst expectations had Yahoo taking in about $1.56 billion in revenue for this quarter, Yahoo actually projects a $1.45 to $1.55 billion revenue intake. A reduction in online ad spending and stiff competition from Google do not bode well for Yahoo’s future, creating the possibility for even slower …read more

Internet Users Get Some Privacy

As you use popular search engines, you may notice that the online advertisements start to, for lack of a better phrase, read your mind. However, these advertisements are part of a widespread marketing tactic that aims to collect internet users’ search information and then direct ads to users based on their most frequent searches.

Today, though, the online advertisement industry is expected to announce a set of reforms and guidelines for their practice of what some internet users have seen as invasions of privacy. Apparently, users will be able to decide to not participate in what is called behavioral advertising in …read more

Microsoft Still Interested in Yahoo

In 2008, Yahoo turned down a Microsoft takeover that had a price tag of more than $47 billion. Although the two sides haven’t had meaningful conversations recently, Microsoft recently said that they are still interested in buying at least a part of Yahoo.
The person behind the comments was Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft. According to multiple reports, Ballmer is interested in acquiring Yahoo’s search traffic. While Yahoo and Microsoft trail Google in the search engine market, Microsoft continues to believe that they could compete with Google if they get help from Yahoo’s massive search engine traffic.
Despite many millions of …read more
