Should You Keep Business Hours? (part 2)

Earlier today, I wrote about normal business hours and how it is my opinion that it isn’t necessarily better for every freelancer to work during the day. I work at night and, in fact, I’m writing this post well in advance and scheduling it to appear on Bizzia. As you’re reading this, I’m probably still sleeping.
Just because it isn’t perfect for every writer to keep traditional business hours doesn’t mean, however, that you shouldn’t keep business hours at all. Let me tell you a short story:
A few years ago, I was dating someone with a schedule that was against every …read more

Five Quick Ways to Make Time for YOU

Earlier today, I wrote about how I often have trouble remembering the day of the week because I’m so busy with freelancing. Ok, maybe saying “often” is dramatic, but when you work at home (and often on weekends), it can be really easy to get caught up in work every single day, never really taking time for yourself. And that’s really not healthy.
I guess I should consider myself lucky, since I don’t have kids or a husband to fill my time, but I do have obligations, like a boyfriend and a pet, as well as a part-time job at a …read more

Help! I Don’t Know What Day It Is…

Unless you have a form of dementia or other mental disease, it shouldn’t be hard to keep track of the day, right? At least, if you don’t know the exact date, you should be able to get close and be able to tell others the day of the week. Right? RIGHT?
Thank god I carry my calendar/schedule with me just about everywhere. The other day I nearly drank milk that was over a week outdated, because I really thought that it was still good. I also regularly miss garbage and recycling days because I forget the day of the week. I …read more

Save Time When Writing

In the world of freelancing, time is money – and that’s true whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction. You don’t want to sacrifice quality as you write, but the more writing you can do every hour, the more money you’ll make. So, how can you increase the rate at which you work while still maintaining a high writing quality?

Take large groups of articles about similar topics.

While the first few articles may go slowly, if you’re writing 10+ about the same subject, you don’t have to do tons of new research for every piece. Research is what takes me the …read more

Yes, I Work at Home. Yes, I Can Dog-Sit…

Without a doubt, one of the worst things about freelancing is that other people don’t “get it.” I love my family and friends, but few of them actually understand that I work just as hard – if not harder – than someone with a 9-to-5. I’m a small business owner.
And it’s degrading when someone thinks that my time isn’t as valuable as their own. Yes, I have flexibility in my schedule, but that doesn’t mean I can dog-sit, watch you kids, or otherwise take time out of my day to do things for you. My time is spent working.
That said, …read more

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

If you’re new to freelancing, than you may not yet fully understand how important scheduling is. Old-timers out there are probably smiling knowingly and nodding right now! I’m curious to hear from you all – what scheduling system works best for you?
Mine? Not so simple. I go old-school, preferring to have a hard copy of a schedule rather than using an Internet program. Why? Easy – I already usually have a dozen windows open. I don’t need another one, and I like to be able to work on my schedule as I’m doing something else. I use a calander rather …read more
