Motivation from Masters: F.Scott Fitzgerald

If I can’t inspire you, maybe some successful writers can. Today’s Motivation from Masters post features F. Scott Fitzgerald.
You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you’ve got something to say.
Why do writers start writing? I don’t know how you would answer that question, but to me, this quote sums things up perfectly. I have so much to say, and writing is my way to say it.
Because I write for a living, not everything I write will change the world – but I’d like to think that my personal projects really do “say something.”

Motivation from Masters: Kurt Vonnegut

If I can’t inspire you, maybe some successful writers can. Today’s Motivation from Masters post features Kurt Vonnegut.
“Who is more to be pitied, a writer bound and gagged by policemen or one living in perfect freedom who has nothing more to say?”
Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors of all time. I don’t always agree with what he has to say, but I respect very much his opinions and ideas. He always makes me think, if nothing else. Here are some other quotes from him that  I love:
“Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and …read more

Motivation from Masters: Maya Angelou

If I can’t inspire you, maybe some successful writers can. Today’s Motivation from Masters post features Maya Angelou.
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”
If for no other reason, Maya Angelou should inspire you because she’s such a spokesperson for the black community and for women of every race. Her work challenges what you already know about everything – even yourself. Some other quotes by her that I love:
“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.”
“I want all my senses engaged. Let me absorb the …read more

Michael Jackson Quotes Writers Should Know

Michael Jackson. Sigh. He was this crazed soul that had such a tragic life and even sadder death. I feel like a part of our culture, as a country, has died with him. He’s left a lot behind, though, and I just wanted to share with you three Michael Jackson quotes that you can apply to your life as a writer:
“I’m never pleased with anything, I’m a perfectionist, it’s part of who I am.”
You should always, always, always be improving as a writer. When you write something, read it. Fix it. Read it again and again. When you give something …read more

A Writer’s Purpose? Whew!

I was looking for a quote about writing books I could use. At Wisdom Quotes / Writing/Writers Quotes I found this:
The purpose of a writer is to keep civilization from destroying itself.
It’s by Albert Camus – and a google search on the quote reveals something like 88,000 entries… it’s quoted a lot it seems.
So writers, how do we keep civilization from destroying itself?
Post your thoughts, please.
Write well and often,

A President’s Day Celebration

You just never know what an editor will do! Kelly Erb is what’s known around b5media as a Channel Editor. Editor is a bit of a misnomer because she doesn’t actually edit – all the mistakes are mine. I think of her as the head honcho of the Business Channel. By any title, and she deserves a lot of ‘em, she’s created a blog entry for b5media’s front page called: Happy President’s Day from the Business Channel!
It’s a unique approach I think. She took some of her favorite presidential quotes and matched each one to a blog in the business …read more

Quotes and Attributions

For years I’ve been attributing this quote to page 570 of Alcoholic’s Anonymous’ Big Book where it attributes the quote to Herbert Spencer.
“There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance—that principle is contempt prior to investigation.”
Yesterday I used it in a forum I belong to and was told Spencer didn’t say this at all and was referred to The Survival of a Fitting Quotation.
Well darn… whose right? Michael StGeorge sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, and he’s got …read more

A Great Quote For Writers

In theory I blog at least twice a day… that doesn’t always happen, particularly on the weekends.
Today my head is full of cotton, hay, and rags (Tin Man of Oz?) so instead of writing or talking with clients or even doing the dishes, I’ve been prowling around some blogs.
Walter Burek, copywriter who blogs at Inklings has a great quote today. Titled strangely Copywriter’s Quote of the Week 12, it’s by H.G. Wells and I’m going to make you go look at it.
The reason I like it so much is that sometimes I’ve written with a committee, and it’s hell.
Write well …read more
