So you’re networking online, right? You’re making a following for yourself. You have oodles of followers on Twitter and you’re a Facebook rockstar with a well-loved blog and people who go to Podcamp think you’re a demi-god for all intents and purposes. (Hey, that’s what I’ve heard, seriously!)
When all that is said and done, what do you do with your mini-famousness?
Looks to me like you do a Facebook Ad that points to a series of Twebinars (for more info on the what and why of Twebinars check out this blog post.)
Oh, wait, first you start a …read more

When the conversation turns to you do you clam up?
It’s far easier for a non-talker to take that first step toward a little shameless self-promotion than it is for a natural talker to learn when and how to stop.
Remember, people do care Afraid to talk because you’re afraid you’ll get dissed or made fun of or brushed off? Remember that people are out there to talk to other people. Networking online or offline is about people getting to know people.
You’re people too!

When you go out there and meet people, you will find that talking about your business becomes second nature. You’ll know how to explain what you do, how your business runs, and how to assess what you can say that will sell you as a potential business colleague to your fellow business owners.
But there are dangers to becoming the belle of the ball. Make sure you keep these tidbits in mind when you go out there to keep yourself from getting lost in the crowd.

Storm Chasers Unite and Network!

Neworking can happen in a strictly business setting, but many clients are those you have other things in common with.
The new FOX Weather Beta is a great way to test the theory.
Storm chasers and weather buffs are some of the most hardcore people I know. These people bond over storms and weather and know things that make other people yawn or grow bored. But among each other, they talk and create long lasting, powerful friendships.
So if you have a business service and you’re connected to someone that shares your love of all things weather and they need …read more
Treat Secretaries Like Gold

The final part of our video series taken from YouTube, this gem is probably way over the top, but it makes a valid point.
The difference I see between this video and reality is that many callers tend to be mean to the secretaries without actually saying anything negative about the person they’re trying to reach. What I find really ironic is that this video is a bit derogatory to secretaries (probably unintentionally) because they show the secretary polishing her nails.
I don’t know about you but when I was young and working as a secretary, I was too busy working …read more
On Oversharing

There is an amazing article that is online now, and will be in the Sunday Times Magazine (is that all capital letters? I’m not certain) from a former Gawker editor/writer and oversharing. Emily Gould wrote for Gawker for over a year along with two other blogs. Now? She’s writing her first feature for the Sunday Times Magazine.
I’m giving away the ending here, but don’t worry, the ending isn’t the important part of the story – the journey is. I highly recommend reading the whole thing.
Well, I’m an oversharer — it’s not like I’m entirely reformed. But lately, online, …read more

Mother always said, “Don’t take candy from strangers.”
Personally, I was never offered candy from strangers as a child, but as an adult I find that there are strangers out there willing to give you candy all the time. From actual candy to discounts to freebies, there’s a lot of candy out there for the perceptive networker.
Girls’ Night Out events have samples galore.
Business cards let you know what people do, that’s sweet!
Home Parties (great for networking depending on the circumstances) always entail free food.
I know for many even going to a networking event is taking a chance. But that’s …read more
