Social Networking Showdown: MySpace

MySpace may not have been the original social networking site, since those who’ve been around long enough can remember Friendster and other such places to meet people online. However, for a long while, MySpace was the reigning social networking site, and today, although it has lost some of its market share to Facebook, it is still highly used, especially by teens and young adults.
But does it have any value to freelancers?
You should use MySpace if…

MySpace Losing to Facebook, Fires 420

A few years ago, MySpace was the leading social networking website on the planet. Now, not only has Facebook caught MySpace in the social networking race, they’re on the verge of pulling away from MySpace.
As part of that fallout, MySpace recently revealed that they will fire about one-third of their employees — or about 420 workers. MySpace says this move will allow the company to become more nimble and more comparable to Facebook. Considering before this move that MySpace had approximately 1,420 employees and Facebook had 850 employees, this move makes a lot of sense on paper.
However, this may be …read more

MySpace to Turn Songs into Cash

MySpace, which was once the king of social networking sites, is now turning to their thriving musician profile option in hopes of raising some money. The new MySpace Music homepage allows users to download songs inexpensively from Amazon – and the networking site takes a cut of the profits.
Facebook overtook the #1 spot a year ago with over 200 million users around the world. MySpace is still a respectable second, and they still lead Facebook in active users per month, but some believe that they’re losing steam. Since buying MySpace in 2005, billionaire Rupert Murdoch hasn’t seen much of a …read more

Universal Music and YouTube Team Up

In a powerful collaboration, Universal Music Group and YouTube have formed a partnership. In their online venture, the two companies will attempt to monetize Universal Music Group’s music video catalog of almost 10,000 songs.
While Universal Music Group will be throwing a lot of money at the project, YouTube is providing the technology for the three-pronged attack. The two companies will split the ad revenue on a dedicated YouTube channel, on the Vevo.com website and on a music video player that will be compatible with social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace.
Universal Music Group’s YouTube channel is currently the most …read more

MySpace COO Leaves to Start New Biz

According to Bloomberg.com, MySpace chief operating officer Amit Kapur is leaving the social networking site to start his own company, along with MySpace execs Jim Benedetto and Steve Pearman.
One of the Internet’s most popular websites, especially among teams, MySpace hasn’t been immune to the economic slump, and they’ve been cutting jobs in order to make up for low advertising sales. They’re in fierce competition with Facebook, which had recently been doing better in user statistics.
MySpace is owned by New Corp, and earlier this week, their COO, Peter Chernin also left the company.
In a statement released earlier today, MySpace said:
