The official word on iPhone pricing in Canada

The day after I wrote my last iPhone post, I received an email from the PR company working with Rogers Mobile (MS&L Digital) on the pricing plans:
Hello, My name is Nicole Burguess and I’m writing on behalf of Rogers to give you some additional information about the Rogers rate plans available for the iPhone. The iPhone 3G bundles released June 27 are not the only price plans available to customers, they are the high value plans that allow Rogers customers to use the device to its fullest and offer considerable savings …read more
Attention Rogers Mobile: You blew it with the iPhone data plans and you know it

Since Rogers Mobile announced their iPhone pricing this week, the reaction to their plans has been less that enthusiastic (to say the least).
RuinediPhone.com has started an online petition to Rogers to change their rate plans and an open letter to Steve Jobs on what is certainly a slap in the face.
Did I sign it? You bet I did. Do I think it will make much of a difference? Yeah, not so much.
That said, this is what I left for them:
Rogers, Canada is a world leader in technology, but Rwanda has cheaper cell and data rates than we do.

Still not getting an iPhone and Rogers’ iPhone plans aren’t helping

When I was in Vancouver this week I was having lunch with Rebecca “Miss604” Bollwitt and Colleen Coplick and saw an iPhone ad in the Rogers store across the street. Yep, the marketing push is in full swing. Only problem is that until today we didn’t know what the plans would be like.
Now we do and all I can say is: ouch.
The official Rogers press release give us a table with all the plans:

Is the cost of an ultraportable justifiable yet?

Last week I was talking about getting an Eee and what I’d put on it, as I was thinking about buying it more seriously I kept seeing ads for decent laptops for about the same price.
This, I thought, is a problem for the UMPC market. When you can get a close-out laptop for the same price, why bother?
Sure it would be small, light and cool, but at what cost?
I earlier wrote how ultraportable notebook computers can be a blogger’s best friend. I’ve been carrying my Asus Eee in my bag most anywhere I go, and I use it to …read more
Twitter’s problems, Pownce’s gain or FriendFeed’s opportunity?
May 21, 2008 by Tris Hussey

Earlier today I say Mark Evan’s ponder getting back into the Pownce habit (which ironically is down/sluggish right now):
I’d really like to use Pownce because it has a richer set of features, including things such as the ability to share files. And while Twitter become the dominant player, Pownce continues to quietly make it ways as the second-place player that tries harder. The biggest challenge facing Pownce is there’s a raging party happening in Twitter’s backyard, and no one wants to leave a rockin’ party for a party with fewer people – even if the Twitter party gets out of …read more
Tungle improves to let Blackberry users make appointments on the go

I’ve been using, and loving, Tungle for a while. Most often I’m the one booking meetings so, I don’t see the invites, but if I got one on the go … when I’m on my Berry, what would I do? Until today I’d have to wait until I got back to my machine an hit a “regular” web browser.
However today Tungle released Blackberry support for their pages:
This is an important part of helping our users coordinate meetings easily and efficiently. Now, they don’t have to wait for people to be in front of their computer to respond to a Tungle …read more
MapleLeaf 2.0 Venture Capital News: JLA Backed Blackberry Fund launches Monday

One of Rick Segal’s favourite examples about new business ideas is a Blackberry app that would know when you’re in a meeting and silence the alerts and such. No wonder then that he’d be involved in a startup fund for new Blackberry software:
VentureBeat decided to jump the gun this weekend and post some news that has been floating around lately about a new Blackberry fund. They deleted the post from their blog, but it was still available in Google Reader and in other places and TechCrunch got to it late on Saturday. The new fund is being managed by RBC …read more
Buying a Telus EVDO card–lessons for retail customer service

I blogged about my new Telus EVDO card this morning, I’ve been using it all day and been very much enjoying it. Okay I think I’ve found a conflict with my built-in SD card reader and the PCMCIA slot, but that might be an Acer thing and I’m not too worried right now. However, what I’d like to relate here is my buying the card yesterday. What I learned and experienced is pretty interesting and can be a lesson to all of us, but especially customer-facing people.
I’m a busy person who would like to spend money with you–treat me like …read more
Buying a Telus EVDO Rev A mobile broadband card–first experiences

One of the challenges of a mobile worker is connectivity when you’re not at home. Sure at home I have a higher-than-average cable internet connection, but when I go on the road, even to a friend’s house that’s a different story. Looking for WiFi can be a pain, even when it’s offered by a cafe or something, not to mention the potential security risks. The solution for many folks, in the US especially, is to get a wireless broadband card (EVDO or HSPA). In Canada though, it’s a different story. I’ve made the jump to one and so far I’m …read more
