Here’s one for you Mac folks:
Mac user and GTDer Julian Schrader turns email messages into tasks with a keystroke, using the iGTD software:
I use iGTD to store and organize my tasks — it is an amazing application and provided for free. I recommend it to any Mac user — I just hit F6 in Mail and it copies the active e-mail over into a new task created in iGTDs Inbox, a link back to the original e-mail included.

Create Separate User Accounts on Shared Computers

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen computers at people’s offices and homes where several people are using a computer, but all under the same account. I’m not even get into if it’s an admin level account or not, just looking at the overlap, confusion and organization of this drives me batty.
From a practical standpoint you have several people’s logins to manage (like Gmail, Hotmail, etc), documents to keep straight, bookmarks, even just colour preferences of windows. All of this can be handled with each user having their own login.
What about shared documents? Simple, I know Windows has cross-account …read more

Did you know you could save all open documents by just holding down the shift key when selecting the File menu? Yeah, Save turns into Save All (okay not in Word 2007 it appears)! Web Worker Daily has six more tips in their article:
Many of us writerly types spend a lot of time in Microsoft Word, and I even know a few Web designers who like to use it and Microsoft Excel for doing simple site prototyping work. Whether you’re sentenced to use Word all day by a dictatorial IT department, or it’s simply your word processor of choice, you …read more
Very important Acrobat Reader tip for laptop users–change the smoothing!

How many of you use PDF? Good. Okay, how many of you have laptops? Lots I bet. Laptops are out selling desktops now so lots more out there than in the past. Did you know, however, that in Acrobat Reader the default font smoothing is for regular monitors? Yeah and with a lot of people using LCD displays with their desktops this is a bit of a gap.
Don’t fret, though, Acrobat has a switch to adjust the smoothing for CRTs vs LCDs. I didn’t think it would make much of a difference (if …read more

Saw this app this week (maybe last?) for GTD on the Mac:
It seems there’s more Getting Things Done inspired software packages out there than there are Flash games littering the web. It’s understandable; GTD has become the geek mantra for productivity, and finding the right tool to suit your GTD needs is like searching for the holy grail. For Mac users, that holy grail may be iGTD. iGTD is a free Mac program that pulls from all of the GTD principles to provide a very concise platform for manging your projects and next actions. Man I’ve been dying to blog about this for over a month. I’ve been in the private beta test of the new MindManager 7 Pro. If you’re a MM fan, this is a good upgrade. Must upgrade? If you use Office 2007, I’d say yeah.
The new MM 7 Pro is officially coming out May 30. I had the chance to listen to a MindJet overview of the new product yesterday (and for disclosure as an invited guest and attendee I get a free license for the new version). What impressed me about this new version are the nice UI improvements. …read more

Being a Windows guy, I don’t really have a plethora of Mac tips. Well at least OS X. Ask me about earlier versions and I might be able to help (though my old PowerComputing tower machine is going to become an Ubuntu server soon), OS X, not so much. I do, however, keep my eye out for OS X tips for you Mac folks. I gather that many of you have a love/hate relationship with Mail.app. I can understand that, lots of us hate Outlook with a passion. I found via Lifehacker a spiffy (I think) set of tips:

My computer crash/panic problems are well documented here. Sure sometimes it’s been my fault, sometimes not. Regardless of the cause, there are tools out there to help you out. Lifehacker’s list is great and believe me, I’m downloading most of the Windows tools (the ones that I don’t already have) asap:
Which one of these tools is right for you depends on your skill level, operating system and particular problem. Do yourself a favor and burn yourself a disc with a couple of these before the terrible day when you need ‘em happens.

Tips to keep OS X running smoothly

I found, twice, and then lost, twice, a link to a tip on how to streamline and clean up Apple Mail’s database (it is a MySQL DB, I gather). While I look for them, again, enjoy these tips on how to keep your Mac ship shape. Although I’m not a Mac guy anymore, I did read through the tips and they all seem to be decent and logical.
Hat tip to Lifehacker, as is often the case.

Did you know the daylight savings time is coming a month early now? You bet, it starts in March now, not in April. So the big question is, is your computer ready for this change?
If you’ve made the switch to Microsoft Vista you’re OK. Microsoft has already updated Vista for the new daylight savings time rules. Windows XP and earlier versions on the other hand, need to be updated or you’re going to be an hour off starting the first Sunday in March. OK so your computer is gonna be fine, after you update it, but what about the rest of …read more
