Welcome to the PR Blogging Thought Leadership Arena of Champions Who Say Very Little, But Often, and with Many Words

There can never be too many … PR blogs. Or maybe there can be.
But as Tom Foremski notes, it’s a good thing when public relations firms adopt social media. They are called upon to recommend PR tactics, including those involving blogs and other consumer-generated content, so they might as well dip their feet in the ‘Sphere and find out what all the fuss is about.
Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide’s Tech PR Nibbles could probably have been better named (at least it’s not PR Dribbles), but it’s definitely worth checking out, as is the more established Ogilvy 360 Digital Influence Blog.

My Twittering comes and goes, depending on whether the service is up at any given time, and I’m online.
If you have a Twitter account, follow me. You can add your Twitter handle in the Comments below, or wait a week or so, and I’ll get around to finding my new followers and adding you.
I don’t do a lot of Tweets during the work day, but evenings and weekends I’ve been known to add to the wisdom of the Twitterverse.

Tweets that Live Beyond the Moment

Twitter posts generally have a half-life of a few hours, before they disappear into a dead zone of 140-character comments.
But when you post something on the Internet, immortality is only a few links away.

A transitory medium can last beyond the moment when others comment about a tweet, or link to it. That can be a good thing, or really embarrassing.

Your Non-digital Life Has no Meaning

(Warning: I have been known to get cranky about bombastic overstatements by the digerati.)
If you don’t have a Twitter account, your career may be kinda meaningless.
That’s the provocative statement teasing readers to visit Todd Defren’s PR Squared blog.
It’s been proven time and again that this technique works. Provoke discussion by making a blanket statement that everyone – author and readers alike – knows is only a device to get your attention.
Twitter, like Flickr and Second Life and Facebook before it, is the Flavor of the Month. I love its simplicity, and the way it allows me to bathe in …read more

Marketing and PR News and Ideas, January 23, 2008

Worth reading:
The Mindset of Marketers on ROI and Engagement – Jonathan Trenn points out the convoluted logic of traditional marketers transferring their dollars to online, while ignoring the opportunities for interaction.
Truth versus Blogosphere Truth – Jeremy Pepper looks at some examples of bloggers jumping on a poorly researched story and amplifying, rather than clarifying, the story.  In a similar vein, Todd Defren offers three studies of companies who either aren’t handling PR properly, or are wrongly accused of that sin. Jake McKee jumps in on the Scrabble/Scrabulous prognostications.
Digg and StumbleUpon Marketing – Lee Raito takes a 30-second shot at why …read more

Best Business Advice Continues to Roll In

A few more words of wisdom from readers.

Yuri Aksyonov, of the PRWeb blog (Russian language):

Don’t try to be an “expert”.  Asking “stupid” questions is not a shame.  The shame is when you can’t understand what you’ve been told after discussion is finished.

-
Ren Garcia, of Accounting Solver blog:

I find an Adidas slogan: IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING particulary catching.

-
Anne Wayman, of The Golden Pencil blog:

Listen to your intuition… which means you’ve got to get quiet once and in a while… maybe even every day? Quiet for a minute or two.
Gratitude helps a lot too.

Mich Sineath, of the Social Media and the CIA blog:

Don’t …read more

Best Business Advice – Short and Sweet

I asked for people’s advice, and it’s starting to flow in.
Here, via Twitter, are the first three four pithy bits of advice.
Paul Young, of the Young PR blog:

Friends first.  Work second.

-
Jason Falls, of the Social Media Explorer blog:

Don’t be intimidated. You’re smarter than most people, you just don’t know it yet.
-

Kevin Dugan of Strategic Public Relations and The Bad Pitch Blog:

Broaden your scope. sometimes we focus too much and need something completely different to keep us creative and fresh.

-
Ike Pigott, of the Occam’s Razr blog:

Drive by the lines, and you drive into the ditch. Steer by the stars, and you’ll …read more

Quick Tip: (Insert your Best Business Advice Here)

(Update)  Advice from Common Sense PR readers:

Larry Yatkowsky of the Yatter Matters blog:

Got cell phone.  Great. Why forward it to your office so that they (the office) can call you back to tell you have a message?  Just answer and make the customer feel like you care enough to take their call personally.

-
Megan, of the Reflections in the Snow-covered Hills blog :

Tell the truth.
AKA:  Admit when you’re wrong.AKA:  Don’t over-promise.AKA:  If you don’t have the answer, say so.AKA:  Say you’re sorry when you’re sorry.

Happy (Belated) Blogiversary to Common Sense PR

Okay, so I missed my own blogging anniversary. It’s never too late for cake and candles.
My first post for Common Sense PR was on October 18, 2006, but the blog didn’t officially launch until December of that year.
I started off by providing a definition of public relations:
My Definition of PR: Listening to and influencing defined audiences to protect your organization’s reputation and motivate members of those audiences to act or think in a particular way.
Simpler Definition: Actively listening and reaching key people with impressions that positively affect their perception of your organization.
Even Simpler Definition: Building relationships.
To everyone I’ve created a …read more
