Invisibility Cloak for Firefox: Eliminates Mindless Web Surfing (Almost)
PimpYourWork.com
In an effort to boost productivity by minimizing time lost due to aimless web surfing, the Invisibility Cloak script for Firefox was born. Taking advantage of Greasemonkey’s ability to run scripts to enhance your Firefox experience, Invisibility Cloak allows you to block sites that doesn’t have anything to do with your work and would normally consume your working time.Invisibility Cloak comes pre-configured with several sites already blocked and cannot be accessed till 3 in the afternoon. You can easily add more sites to the blocked list and even include excluded sites as well. When you try to access the …read more
Firefox Plugin: Customize Google
In an effort to enhance the Google experience in Firefox, CustomizeGoogle was born. It’s a free Firefox extension that adds flexibility to Google services. Customizing is as easy as opening the Add-on window, clicking on options and choosing what functions you would want to activate or deactivate. You can turn on Google Suggest, a feature that suggests words as you type them when doing a web search. Filter spam sites and exclude them from your web search.
One of my favorite things about this is that users can remove ads on several of the Google services available, such as in Gmail …read more

Zoho Moves Offline, But Was It the Right Move?

This week online office suite company Zoho announced that they have used Google’s Gears technology and API to give Writer some offline capabilities:
Zoho announced early this morning that they’ve taken the first steps toward making Zoho Writer available as an offline app using the Google Gears tool. Initially the docs saved offline will be read only but full offline functionality is planned. Source: Zoho takes the first step towards offline apps | Office Evolution | ZDNet.com
Call me a skeptic, but I don’t think this is the best way to do the online-offline bit. I’ve been playing with Zoho Notebook recently …read more

Have a widescreen monitor? Chances are if you have a newer laptop you do. Even lots of desktop users are jumping on the widescreen bandwagon. Well, funny thing is that applications haven’t caught up with this change in monitor size. Fear not, though, help is on its way.
I found this from GHacks a long while ago, but there is a very, very simple way to tweak Firefox to make the most of your monitor. Jonathon Weare’s tips will take you, oh, 5 minutes to put into place and the benefit is immediate. In fact when I was using a desktop machine …read more

I am a begrudging Firefox user. IE was driving me nuts as I opened more and more tabs. I do still think Maxthon is da bomb, but sometimes not being able to use an IE plugin I want/need gets old. So Firefox it is. One thing Firefox is well-known for is its extensions. You can go seriously nuts with extensions and the more you have the more memory Firefox will take up, btw. Read/Write Web has a list of awesome plugins to check out:
Firefox is a browser that can be extended and enhanced in many ways – chief among those …read more
Doodle your way to a meeting time

No I don’t mean drawing goofy things on a piece of paper. I mean using the site/service Doodle to help you plan a meeting:
So, lately, I’ve found myself informally assuming this role, driving a surprising number of gone-fallow projects just by using Doodle to propose a simple check-in. The bottom line is that this process of getting a stupid 15-minute call on the calendar of several busy people will tell you so more than you can imagine about where you and your project stand. But where’s Doodle enter in to it?
As I’ve mentioned before, Michael Näf’s web application is …read more

If you’re feeling adventurous, GHacks tells us that Firefox 2.0.4 is out. I downloaded it, installed it, and everything seems to be hunky dory. Give it a shot early or just wait until the update is pushed out.

Expanding the top 5 Web 2.0 apps into the virtual office

Gili over on Connected Internet (one of my fav sites for new and opinion, btw) has picked the top 5 Web 2.0 apps for the enterprise. They are:
Salesforce.com
Zoho office
Basecamp
Wordpress
Google Apps
I haven’t tried Salesforce.com or Zoho yet (though I keep meaning to), they rest I have tried and I can recommend them without hesitation. I think, though, there are more apps that are worthy of the list.
A good online RSS reader with a sharing feature (Google Reader or Newsgator Online)
An easy wiki (Socialtext has come a long way since I first looked at it–and I actually like it!)
Interesting that …read more
Toggl–free, web-based time tracking, worth a solid look

One of the banes of consultants is often time tracking. Good time tracking software is hard to find, regardless of price, good, free time tracking software is nearly impossible to find. Believe me, I’ve looked.
So whenever the words, “free” and “time-tracking” appear in a post title my ears perk up. But when you mix “web-based” into it … well I don’t get my hopes up. I’ve seen lots of ways to do it, and for me simplicity is key.
DownloadSquad highlights Toggl as something worth a serious look, and I agree. Toggl (strange name for sure)–which from the looks of their …read more
