In Response to the Comments on My Mean Girls Post…

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — The comments exploded on my mean girls post when I wasn’t looking! I tried to respond in the comments box, but it got so ridiculously long that it made more sense as its own post. So, here goes.
I’m going to steal from a comment I just left on Ry’s post "Why I Fear Women and Love Mythical Hobbits":

Whether Heather [Armstrong] is in actuality a mean girl is in my opinion immaterial to this discussion because she’s not the one talking smack on the blogs and making herself look like a vitriolic shrew — and THAT is what I …read more

Apparently Mean Girls Just Don’t Grow Out of It

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — The thing about mean girls is that, unless someone smacks them down — hard — along the way, they grow from being mean girls to being mean women. And sometimes, girls who started out nice are so tormented by mean girls that they turn mean as they get older. And then, we all get to work with them. Good times.
This weekend at BlogHer, there was some drama during the closing keynote. I don’t know any of the people involved personally and I couldn’t tell you anyone’s intentions and I’m not going to try. But here’s what happened in …read more

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — I hate group projects. I’ve always hated group projects. I hate having to check in with people, having to deal with the part of the job no one else wants, having to pick up other people’s slack, having to have my performance–be it a grade, a review, or a check–depend on someone else’s work, having to share credit for something I did. And did I mention that nothing anyone else does is ever good enough for me because I always think I could do it better? Frankly, I would rather just do the whole thing myself.
Yeah, I know …read more

Are You Taking Chances With Your Career?

When is the last time you took a professional risk? When did you last step our of your comfort zone? Are you floating along on a river of complacency, or are you challenging yourself to grow as a person and as a businesswoman?
I’m in the midst of a big professional overhaul, precipitated by the realization that I don’t really know what I do for a living. I mean, yes, I know what tasks I complete to pay the bills, but as far as answering the question, "What do you do?" I’m kind of lost. In fact, I’m so lost that …read more

Finding YOUR Place in the Workplace: When Are We Really Grownups?

I think I’m having an identity crisis. Here I am, 26 years old and running my own business, and some days I feel like I don’t know if I’m coming or going. Am I an entrepreneur, or just a wannabe working in my PJs? Or maybe a little of both?
This is always on my mind after I meet with my colleagues who have “real jobs.” Last week, I attended a committee meeting for one of the professional organizations I belong to, and I definitely felt like the kid in the room. I was dressed professionally, I arrived on time, I …read more
