Many small solo business owners I know run their businesses from a laptop. If you don’t have employees and you work from home, or on the road, why not? With the availability of wireless communications and the computer power of laptops, you can do just about anything with a laptop that you can do with a PC.
Benefits of Running Your Business on a Laptop
It is convenient, easy to transport from room to room or from home to office. Everything is in one place, so you don’t have to switch files back and forth. You know your software is compatible, because …read more
Should You Start Your Business Part-time?

Are you considering starting a small business? Have you thought about starting part-time, getting your feet wet before you actually jump into the pool? When I started my home business several years ago, I was still working full-time and I was reluctant to give up the income of my full-time job. It has only been 7 months since I left that job to work full-time on my business. Here is what I found to be the benefits and drawbacks of starting part-time.
Benefits of Starting Part-time:
The most obvious benefit is your ability to keep your present job – and income – …read more

No, I’m not talking about the writer’s strike, at least not this time. I’m referring to that stack of papers on your desk, or the pile of yet-to-be-read books by your bed. Or maybe, even how long it takes you to find a client’s file on your computer.
I’m sure a goodly number of you never have this kind of problem. But I know I’m not the only one who, occasionally at least, let’s stacks of stuff grow. Which is why I was delighted to discover b5media has a blog dedicated to helping people organize their business. It’s called MyOrganizedBiz. Not …read more

Michael Stelzner’s Top 10 Blog Posts for Writers (The Best From The Best in 2007!) has some gems.
For example, WebWritingInfo.com has an article called: Are you building your house on a pile of sand?. It does a good job of pointing out why good writing is a better marketing tool over time than schlock seo articles just thrown together to drive traffic.

I was pretty sure I knew what she was talking about, but before I jumped into solve…
This is how I started an article I posted at Writing With Vision – take a look.

Wow. I don’t have a complete idea in my head this morning. Not a creative one anyway. I’m hardly beyond “I need another cup of coffee.”
Yesterday I was hugely productive. It was one of those days when words flew off my keyboard. I also handled a bunch of phone calls, an in depth meeting and rounded it out with dinner and trick or treating with my grandkids.
My case of brain fog sort of ties in with the post I did the other day called What’s Your Writing Routine? My experience tells me that once you’ve got a writing routine, that …read more
Get a Perspective On Your Writing

One of the quickest ways to improve your writing is to set the piece you’re working on aside for a day or two, or even longer. Thursday, I promised one of my ghostwriting clients that I’d review the manuscript as far as we’ve gotten over the weekend. What I didn’t tell him is I had no plans of picking it up until Sunday afternoon.
Sure, there were other things I wanted to do Friday and Saturday, but I also wanted to create some distance between myself and the work I’ve been doing.
It’s amazing what you’ll pick up when you give …read more
101 Reasons Why Freelancers Do It Better

Rich McIver sent me a link to 101 Reasons Freelancers Do it Better over at HR World. The list, which apparently was put together by a group of editors, is broken into several categories, including Time, Sticking it to The Man, Money, Relationships, and others.
If you’re not freelancing now, you will when you finish reading the list, or you’ll get more serious about striking out on your own. The list runs from serious to silly, making it fun. Hard to choose my favorite entries, but No fluorescent lighting is right up there for me, along with Time is on your …read more
