In order to compensate for increasing amounts of demand for several of its products, electronics retailer Best Buy plans to boost its seasonal staff for the holiday season. According to the company, Best Buy has experienced a surge in demand for products such as televisions compared to last year and has decided to increase hiring accordingly.
Demand for flat-screen televisions, smartphones, and netbooks has increased over the last year, with flat-screen television sales in July actually exceeding sales numbers reached by the company last December. However, Best Buy is still struggling with falling same-store sales, which declined 3.9 percent last quarter, …read more

Before you Hire or Fire – Learn this Law

Business owners have many rules to follow and some “laws” that should govern their decisions. Here is one law every small business owner must be aware of. It’s called Parkinson’s Law and it was developed by C. Northcote Parkinson. The law:
‘WORK EXPANDS SO AS TO FILL THE TIME AVAILABLE FOR ITS COMPLETION’
The corollary of the law is the saying, “If you want something done, ask a busy person.” We all know people who are busy and well-organized and who get lots done. If you ask them to do something else, they easily fit it into their schedule. If people are …read more
Hire Big People to Grow Your Business

I don’t mean you should hire giants.
Advertising great David Ogilvy said, “If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs. But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, we shall become a company of giants.“
Some random thoughts on getting – and keeping – exceptional people for your small business:
Don’t be afraid to break the rules. It is often said that you should hire for the position, not the person. But in today’s economy, you may find people who are over-qualified for the position for which …read more
College Grads Face Rough Hiring Climate
March 4, 2009 by Stephen Kersey

It’s no secret that job outlook isn’t a positive one right now. According to a recent study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), it is estimated that employers will hire 22% fewer new college graduates from the 2009 class than they did from last year’s class.
This could be the worst hiring climate for college grads since 2002, when the dot-com bust and 9/11 attacks sent hiring plummeting 36%. If the projections hold true, this will break the string of positive college grad hiring reports every year from 2004 through 2008.
According the report, finance graduates will face the …read more

Interview Etiquette?

Here is an interesting question I found on Yahoo Answers!
Agh! I sent in my resume to a company a few days ago, for a part-time job that pays a bit above minimum wage. I forgot, however, that I had mistakenly put my cell number on the resume instead of my home phone. And, since I don’t regularly use my cell, I missed the original call from my potential employer. He called to set up an interview on Friday, and I only just got the message–it’s past 6pm on a Sunday night. Have I ruined my first impression? Where should I …read more
