When One Door Closes, Another One Opens

When one door closes, another one opens! You are the captain of your ship. You are not at the mercy of other people. Even when someone makes a decision about you, your present or your future, you are still not without choice. You get to choose how you will respond to the decisions others make and I am a firm believer that when others make decisions about you, you get to choose your next move. You can remain in a bad situation and blame the people and circumstances or you can choose out of the bad situation and create a …read more

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Sometimes you can’t win for losing. A bad day is a bad day. Not that I have them often, but I do have an occasional bad day. How about you? Here’s a thought, no matter what happens in our day, good or bad, we get to choose how we will respond to it. That being said, I saw a video clip on YouTube that was funny. It’s actually a commercial done with children. Grab a handful of popcorn and sit back for the next 40 seconds and watch this video clip. I believe it can give you perspective on a …read more

The Dreaded Question

So many people have lost their job for poor judgment on their part. Many times we don’t think about the consequences for our actions. As a result, when attempting to find employment in an employers market, involuntary termination can be a difficult thing to respond to in an interview. Most people who have been fired, dread the question, “Have you ever been discharged or asked to resign from a job? Yes__ No__ If yes, explain.”
Here is a question I received recently. I have changed a few details to ensure I maintain the identity of my reader.
“A few years ago, …read more

FIRED! What Can An Employer Really Say?

What can an employer really say about you if you were fired with or without cause? It depends. It depends on the organization and/or the state you live in. Some organizations believe in full disclosure and will tell all. And there are other organizations who will only verify dates of employment, salary and whether you are rehirable.
There are many people who believe that an employer will never know they were fired. But that is a mistake. You are deceiving your self if you think that an organization won’t find out. If you don’t prep your references properly, that is one …read more

Are You Afraid Of Being Fired?

Fear of failure is an issue for many, many talented people. They have “mad” skills and vision and yet can’t seem to be successful. They tend to sabotage their successful accomplishments. Fear of being fired can create the same level of sabotage for you if you’re not careful. You become swallowed up in the fear of losing your job that you sabotage yourself – and the termination you were afraid might come plays out and you find yourself without a job. In the economic climate that we have swirling around us, with unemployment continuing to rise, those with jobs may …read more

Lying in an Interview is Unacceptable

This morning I had the privilege of meeting with a new coaching client. She has been looking for a job for a long time and has been unsuccessful. In the course of our conversation we discussed whether she has been fired. Turns out she has been fired in the distant past.
The problem is she has not answered the question truthfully when asked in an interview. Albeit, it was more than 10 years ago. But the bottom line is the answer to the question is YES! I know she is not the only person who has ever lied about being fired. …read more

She Thought She Was Getting Fired

I woke to this story yesterday morning and I knew I wanted to share it with you. This woman thought she was fired. Read the story and tell me what you think.
Angry Employee Deletes All Of Companies Data
Call it a tale of revenge gone wrong.
When Marie Lupe Cooley, 41, of Jacksonville, Fla., saw a help-wanted ad in the newspaper for a position that looked suspiciously like her current job — and with her boss’s phone number listed — she assumed she was about to be fired.
So, police say, she went to the architectural office where she works late Sunday night …read more
