You got the offer!! Wow! Congratulations! I want you to imagine having this conversation with a friend:
You: “Congratulations on your job offer!”
Friend: “Well, thanks! I can’t believe it, I got the job.”
You: “What do you mean, you can’t believe it?”
Friend: “Well, I lied on the application. I didn’t want them to call my last employer, so I told them I was still employed and I didn’t allow them to contact my last employer.”
You: “It must be bitter sweet to celebrate your accomplishment and yet you know in the depth of your being that you lied to get it.”

When Bias Is In Your Favor
I read a great blog post the other day over at Biz Chicks Rule called “Pimped Out Politics: Is It OK If She Likes It”. I won’t summarize the article here because I’m hoping you’ll pop over and read it yourself – it was very interesting.
Reading Biz Chick’s post has got me thinking more about how you the interview candidate should handle a situation where you know you are getting a job offer because of the interviewers bias. Suppose you know they are offering you the job because you are black and somehow they plan to use your race to their …read more
Should Employers Do Credit Checks On Applicants?
It seems that more and more companies are checking the credit of potential candidates as part of their background check process.
I didn’t have a lot of luck finding good information about this but if I had to guess, I’d say that this would be much more important in jobs that require money management. I can see why a company who is recruiting somebody to manage their finances would want to look at how the candidate manages personal finances as a predictor of how good a job they’d do. But, on some level this credit checking business irks me.
I can honestly say …read more
Criminal Background Checks: Honesty Never Goes Out Of Style
These days there are very few companies who hire employees without doing a basic criminal background check. Spending a few dollars up front to filter out candidates who could potentially cause big problems later just makes sense.
So what if you’ve been convicted of a crime?
As Darlene said in her recent post about the “have you been fired” question, it’s always best to be honest. If you’ve been convicted of a crime, it’s best to answer that question honestly on the application. Here are a few reasons why:
Most companies have a no-tolerance rule against falsifying applications. It’s better to never accept …read more

I shared a post with you I found over at BossHatch on Monday. Here is the ethical dilemma:
Frank is your go-to guy in sales. You recently hired him after you decided to expand your business. His résumé was put together incredibly well and he had a long list of references. With his charismatic approach and a long list of credentials, you hired him. About one month later, you decided to do a little searching. You find out he lied on his application… not just one lie, but 50% of his references have never met him, and he had only minimal …read more

This morning as I was scanning the various posts here at b5media Business Channel, I saw one that caught my eye from BossHatch: Oh Crap Situation 16: The Resume. It was the resume portion that got my attention. I wondered about the situation.
Here it is:
Frank is your go-to guy in sales. You recently hired him after you decided to expand your business. His résumé was put together incredibly well and he had a long list of references. From the Inside Out – Eliot Spitzer

The governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, has been a hot topic this week in the news and dare I say in the blogosphere. I have hesitated about writing about the mess I see with this governor. Why? Because accept for God’s grace, there is no one immune from allowing their impulses to dictate their behaviors. And for the consequences of that choice to become public.
As a blogger in the career niche I get lots of comments about people losing their jobs – terminations, specifically. People who get fired for one reason or another. One person recently wrote that he/she …read more

The opening of the show with Omorosa hoping that Carol gets fired and then she is the first person to hug her when she walks in the door which was very telling of who she is as a person.
Unfortunately, that was a foreshadowing of a two hour distraction, that ended with Vinnie Pastore quitting and leaving the show.
Task: Soles United – Croc Awareness Campaign – Create an In-store receptacle bin.
The bottom line of the show this week is that Empresario finally got a win!! The ladies beat the men with an excellent presentation.
Tonight’s show was more about the Ethical …read more

Angry Employee Deletes All Of Companies Data
Call it a tale of revenge gone wrong.
When Marie Lupe Cooley, 41, of Jacksonville, Fla., saw a help-wanted ad in the newspaper for a position that looked suspiciously like her current job — and with her boss’s phone number listed — she assumed she was about to be fired.
So, police say, she went to the architectural office where she works late Sunday night …read more
What Do You Write On The Application… If You Were Fired?

Here is a question asked by Drew Williams, one of my readers here at Interview Chatter:
The problem I’m having is that question is asked on the application, usually an online one, and you are screened out automatically. Do I answer “no” so I can get an interview and then explain everything then? I will have already been dishonest but I have to answer question or I won’t be able to finish application?
The the simple answer is to answer “yes” to this question on an application if you have been fired. Honesty is critical to you successfully navigating the hiring process. But …read more
