It seems a little unbelievable that the day is finally here – Election Day 2008.
This is the first election, in many, many, of our lifetimes, that we’re guaranteed a completely “new” person will be entering the White House; it’s the first election in 80 years in which no “incumbent” (Pres or VP) is running.
So go out and vote! Make sure that your One Vote Matters!

A recent AP-Yahoo News poll shows that pet owners prefer a candidate that also owns pets.
In the 2008 election, their candidate of choice would be John McCain. The McCains own a variety of pets, including 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 turtles, a ferret, 3 parakeets and a collection of saltwater fish.
The Obamas currently do not own any pets. Reportedly, however, he has promised his daughters that they will get a dog when then election is over.
The poll shows that among pet owners, 42 percent support McCain and …read more

Former Senator, Vice President and Presidential Candidate, Nobel Peace Prize and Oscar winner, Al Gore has endorsed Barack Obama.
Gore’s endorsement comes 2 weeks after Obama secured the delegates necessary to win the Democratic Primary (and about a week and a half after Senator Hillary Clinton formally suspended her bid for the nomination).
Before a crowd of Obama supporters in Detroit, Michigan, Gore spoke of the importance of elections (something he knows first hand) to all Americans affected by the policies of the Bush Administration.

Hillary Clinton cites possible assassination as reason to stay in Dem Race.

Senator Clinton was speaking in South Dakota when she addressed the issue of continuing her campaign.
She noted that her husband, Bill Clinton, did not become the presumptive nominee until June, 1992 and…
“We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”
Senator Clinton’s campaign insists that the comment was intended to illustrate how past races have gone on until the summer, but it was, at best, a very poor choice of example.
And, of course, in the past, states did not all hold their primaries (rightly or wrongly) in the first few months of the election year.

Although it’s pretty clear that it’s going to be a big win for Senator Clinton – we’ll hang out for a while to see just what the “experts” and the exit polls are saying about the results and the future of the campaign.

Who has the votes?

On Tuesday, May 6th, North Carolina and Indiana will hold their (respective) primary elections.
As the number of state elections dwindle, the race between Illinois Senator, Barack Obama, and New York Senator, Hillary Clinton, tightens. Senator Obama has maintained a slight but consistent lead over Senator Clinton throughout the campaign. But, Clinton’s wins in pivotal states such as Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania have brought the contest to a virtual tie.
The (pledged, that is, not counting “super delegates”) delegate count, following the Pennsylvania primaries, has Barack Obama with 1,734 pledged delegates while Hillary Clinton has 1,597. The Democratic candidate needs 2,025 to secure …read more
McCain’s Health Care Plan

Senator McCain announced his Health Care Plan this week. If he is elected President he will champion a plan that focuses on individual choice and giving families the power to select their own coverage and create a system that empowers the individual to choose what coverage is best for his/her situation and would create greater competition among insurance companies, thus reducing costs.
He proposes a health care credit to offset health care costs. Individuals and families that are not covered by employer based care would receive $2,500 and $5,000, respectively, per year.
It is estimated that the program will cost …read more

At least not in Central PA.
The 12 man race for the PA 5th district is now down to 2.
And those who were victorious were those who stayed out of the muck and, apparently, out of the bank.
Republican health care professional, Glenn Thompson, beat out big spenders, Matt Shaner and Derek Walker. The Centre Daily Times reports that Thompson spent $20,000 on his campaign, while Shaner spent $1.2 million and Walker shelled out around $800,000. Separating himself from the field of 9 candidates, Thompson won the race with 19% …read more
Student Loans: Too Early to Call it a Crisis?

This post comes from Daily Blender host, R.K. Gella, as part of the b5mdia Business Channel’s April Scramble.
With the presidential campaign rhetoric ablaze with mortgage restructuring and lender responsibility, one issue that has escaped acknowledgement, at least for now, are the outlets parents have for their children’s higher education.
Student loan companies are claiming protection from bankruptcy and lenders are looking to the government for increased subsidy, making it more difficult for parents to lock down a loan. Students will begin to receive notification from their top tiered schools soon and parents have to wonder if any financial …read more
