Desk Space Genie Launches in the UK

Recently, a new website hit the Internet to help companies in the UK make money from unused desks in their offices. Called Desk Space Genie, this website will connect businesses with empty offices to freelancers or small business owners who don’t want to rent an entire office, but want a place away from their home to work.
Says Ciaron Dunne of Desk Space Genie in the company’s press release:
The supply has been more than matched by demand, as the past decade has seen an explosion in remote working due to improvements in communications and an increased reliance on freelancers and contractors, …read more

Installing The New Equipment in the Writer’s Office

So about 8:30 I come home with a brand new HP OfficeJet j5780 which I got from my nearby Staples. It’s cool; it’s small, it has a sheet feeder and a pretty small footprint… smaller than the one it replaced.
I’d forgotten the goat dance that goes on when you get new equipment.
First, there’s the unpacking. Then there’s taking all the shipping tape off. HP knows I won’t read a manual to start so provides a big sheet with drawings of what I’m supposed to do… which works pretty well until I get to the USB cable.

Except it turned out to be a spec of who knows what masquerading as misplaced punctuation. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll notice weird spots on your screen… mine are usually toward the bottom and probably come from the last coffee I sprayed everywhere laughing at some joke.

Jennifer Hofmann, over at MyOrganizedBiz suggests: Clean the screen so your …read more

What’s In Your Office (Or On Your Desk)?

Every now and again I run a what’s on your desk post, where I share what’s on mine and invite you to do the same… only now I have a whole office. It’s a mess, but I love it. So here’s what’s in my office:

Two windows facing south… I love it.
A computer hutch belonging to someone else… he has until the end of the week ;)

A door!
A new desk from Ikea that lets me stand while I work.
My printer is on the floor.
My basket of goodies… you know, the stapler, the stables, the camera, the food roller, the wooden kazoo… …read more

What’s On Your Desk?

Okay, I’m bragging… my desk is close to tidy. Someone suggested that while a cluttered desk may be a sign of a cluttered mind, a clean desk actually opened up space for your writing business to expand.
I have no idea if that’s true or not, but the idea of cleaning up my desk so my business will grow is a much better motivator for me than the virtue of cleanliness or because it would please my mother.
So, what’s on my desk today, more or less:

Computer, monitor, track ball, printer and speakers

Solar calculator

A box of ink cartridges (hidden …read more
