Comcast Looks Over Opportunities

Comcast Chief Executive Brian Roberts has stated that his company will be looking at all of its possible opportunities in the content business going forward in an attempt to expand. However, Roberts, CEO of the largest cable operator in the United States, refused to comment on the specifics.
Comcast is widely believed to be in talks with General Electric Co to acquire a majority stake in NBC Universal in a move that would combine Comcast’s cable assets, $4 billion to $6 billion in cash, and NBC Universal to create a new content company. Broadband Carriers Avoid Stimulus Money

As part of the federal government’s stimulus package, $4.7 billion dollars have been set aside to bring high-speed internet to areas in which such a luxury has not yet been introduced. However, the deadline to accept the money, August 20, is rapidly approaching, and surprisingly few big-name broadband carriers have stepped up to the plate and taken the money.

Comcast and Verizon FiOS Working Together

Sometimes enemies are your best friends. That is apparently true in the television industry. Recently, Comcast announced that they will partner with Verizon FiOS to sell advertising in a total of ten markets where both companies fight for customers.
While financial details of the agreement haven’t been released, it is believed that Comcast’s sales department will handle the advertising for both companies in the ten markets.
The ten markets in question are Washington, DC; Seattle, Washington; Richmond, Virginia; Portland, Oregon; Boston, Massachusetts; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Fort Wayne, Indiana and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

DirecTV, Comcast Fined for Calls

The Federal Trade Commission announced today that both DirecTV and Comcast are being fined today for making phone calls to people who has asked them not to call back. This violates the do-not-call law, called the Telemarketing Sales Rule.
DirecTV has faces such fines in the past. In 2005, DirecTV paid a $5.3 million settlement for violating FTC’s rules regarding the Do Not Call registry. This time, both DirecTV and Comcast are facing fines for calling people who specifically requested to be put on the companies’ internal do not call lists. Sony StyleComcast Labs to Open

In a joint venture, Sony and Comcast will be opening a retail store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The store, which will carry the name Sony StyleComcast Labs, will be used by both companies to show off new products, services and technologies.
Although many experts are questioning the timing of this venture, especially with the economy in shambles and consumer buying at a quarter century low, it appears as if Sony and Comcast will be trying to mimic the success of the Apple stores across the United States.
