Pay rate is a tricky topic among freelancers. I know some writers who change as little as $5 for a 500-word article. Others wouldn’t dream of charging less than $200 for the same article. So who’s right?
As a writer, it is important to charge enough to make the salary you want. I highly recommend reading the article How to Set Salary Goals to learn more about calculating how much you …read more

Records are the force that will drive your freelance writing business. They don’t have to be fancy-schmancy – they just have to work. Unfortunately, many people new to being a boss don’t realize exactly which records they need to track. Keeping track of everything, on the other hand, can eat up your time. The driving force behind any writing company is a team of amazing freelance writers. Finding those great writers isn’t very easy, though. There are literally hundreds of freelancers looking for jobs, but the ones who are up to your standards often don’t want to work for someone else and the ones who are hungry to work for a writing company are often new to writing and may not have the …read more
Learn to be a Freelance Boss

At some point in your freelance career, probably when you first start freelancing, you’ll work for some kind of writing company. In other words, instead of working directly with a client, you and other writers will work for a “head writer” of sorts, and that person will be the middle man. It can be a good set-up, as long as the freelancer in charge isn’t taking advantage of you with low prices. You get to avoid job trolling, they make a little money serving as the project coordinator.
Then, if you’re like me, you’ll start to want that coordinator job yourself. …read more

Call it a tale of revenge gone wrong.
When Marie Lupe Cooley, 41, of Jacksonville, Fla., saw a help-wanted ad in the newspaper for a position that looked suspiciously like her current job — and with her boss’s phone number listed — she assumed she was about to be fired.

“Happiness on the job sometimes comes down to one person: Your manager. Your manager can matter more than money, title or benefits. People don’t always quit jobs, they sometimes quit bosses. Many workers leave a position because they’re unhappy with their bosses. On the other hand, if you genuinely like and respect your boss, your job can be …read more

Why do you want to leave your current job? This question is deceptively easy to answer, but if you have not thought about it, you could potentially shoot yourself in the foot. This is a question you should prepare for prior to walking into an interview.
Interviewers are listening for valid reasons you want to leave your current job. If you are running from a bad situation, this is not the time to talk about it. If your boss is unbearable or unmanageable, this is not the place to make those complaints.
