Online Video Works Out for Charity

MemeLabs, the online video contest gurus, have a new contest, and one that sounds pretty cool. Chip Wilson, the Lululemon founder, apparently isn’t dead yet, and to commemorate that, he’s holding a walk/run/parade/party …thing.

This is the 2nd year for the “Chip’s Not Dead Yet!” one mile, uphill race where all proceeds support BC Children’s Hospital. This race is different; you have the choice to run, walk, or parade in one of the various ‘waves’ that go up the hill. If you want to run in your underwear, so be it. If you want to run in a bridesmaid dress, go for it.

On Friday, June 20th, 2009, a busy street in the Vancouver neighborhood known as Kitsilano will be completely closed to traffic and the event starts. You run in “waves” of themes - all the superheroes together, all the animals, the gladiators… well, you get it.

The fastest one up the hill will win $20,000, but, you’ve got a chance to win $1,000 right now! Memelabs wants to know what your ideal themed wave would look like. Dress up as your favourite superhero or even run in your underpants! Tell us what you think would make for the best wave and you will have a chance to win $1000 in cash and one of our monthly prize packs! Enter here!

For a quick sneak peek of the race, check out the video.

Would you rather be interesting or influential? Do you have to choose?

Ever since I started participating more in the social media world, I’ve been corrected when using the word “influential” to describe a group, or a person. Apparently, the Social Media elite would rather be considered “interesting”. Personally, I’d like to be both. This internal debate between influential and interesting has been boiling around in my brain for some time, and even more so since I started playing with TwInfluence.

On the one hand, these kinds of little random statastic applications are totally useful for people like me - I pitch myself as a loudmouth.  Being able to say that my personal reach is over 1.4 million people is immensly helpful. Things like TwInfluence back my words up. (image source: screenshot)

On the other hand, there’s so many of these little applications out there that the introduction of yet one more makes me roll my eyes and ask “another one??”

I’ve found one that I really do like, and I’ll be posting about that tomorrow. I just asked my Twitter followers what their favourite APIs are, and now I ask you - what is your favourite API for Twitter?

Timeline of the Interwebs

Dipity, a site I’d never heard of before Caroline McCarthy (who I thought had given up blogging?) mentioned it on The Social, has created an internet meme timeline. It includes pretty much everything, from RickRolled to the Dancing Baby and more.

Pretty damn cool, or as Caroline said, completely awesome.

From what I understand, as long as you’re a Dipity member, you can add to the timeline… is there anything you notice that’s missing?

Fun Friday: The influencing moment

June 27, 2008 by Colleen Coplick

The business channel frequently does “Fun Friday” posts that you can see all over the channel. Last Friday I participated, but forgot to tag it as a Fun Friday post because I was busy doing blog off stuff.

This week, the question is: your business epiphany - what one moment influenced your career or business more than any other?

I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out. Finding just ONE moment is difficult, and to add to that, I’ve changed careers slightly. If I were to tell you what influenced my PR career, it would definitely be meeting a woman who did PR and spent time telling me about her job, and encouraging me to go and play in the world of PR.

If I had to choose the one moment that influenced my current career, I think it would have to be sitting down and talking to my friend Lisa about the English Civil War.

Somehow, and I can’t remember how at the moment, we got onto the topic of my life. and what was bothering me at the time (and that’s probably how we got on the topic of my life), and Lisa started to explain the concept of the Salonnieres to me.

She’s reading this book called the English Civil War: Papists, Gentlewomen, Soldiers, and Whitchfinders in the Birth of Modern Britain. It discusses these women, who were, essentially, the connectors. The women who had a large network, brought people together and connected the dots for each other.

Lucy Hay is the one that Lisa is particularly referencing me to. The book describes her as:

Lucy Hay was England’s salonniere, a beautiful woman who enjoyed politics, intrigue, plots but also intellectual games, poetry, love affairs, (intellectual and probably occasionally physical, fashion, clothes and admiration.

The full explanation is here. See, it’s hard to pick just one moment! Think about it – what would your moment be?
