Tips for Branding Your Domain Name

seosmarty.jpgGab Goldenberg from SEO ROI keeps sending cool posts my way (I really do owe him).  Today, he put me in touch with Ann Smarty from SEOsmarty.com.  Ann wrote a great post called 15.4 Tips to Brand Your Domain Name where she suggests a variety of ideas and suggestions that could be very helpful next time you’re searching for a domain name.

With so many great names taken (or being held for ransom) these days, it can be difficult to find a decent domain name let alone one that clearly and effectively communicates your brand image and brand message.  women-on-business-blog.JPG

For example, I just started a new blog (which I hope to ultimately grow into more than just a blog in the future) that is meant to be a portal for information, news and more for women in business.  After days of searching, trying to be creative, and trying to be clear and concise, I found www.WomenOnBusiness.com and snatched it up as quickly as I could.  While it wasn’t the exact name I wanted, it certainly communicated my brand message.  I hope to build Women On Business to be a gateway for women across the blogosphere and internet who work in the field of business to communicate and network.  The site will be a place where women will speak and write on business topics.  Again, it’s not perfect, but it delivers the brand message clearly and concisely.

Ann’s post on SEOsmarty about branding your domain name is perfect for bookmarking.  I love how she wraps up her list with the following reminders:

  • Plan ahead: think how easily your new domain name will be branded. Learn from the best: wikitravel.org (from wikipedia.org), Mozbers (SeoMoz + Members), etc.
  • Try to avoid potential misspellings.
  • Make sure your domain name is easily spelled.

Check out Ann’s post about branding your domain name when you get a chance.  And when you have a few extra minutes, check out my new blog for Women On Business!
