Where Do You Write?

webJennifer Hofmann, who blogs at MyOrganizedBiz.com, another b5media blog, posted recently an article called: Should your office be in the bedroom?

She makes a strong case that it should not, but I know I wrote in a studio where my bed turned into my desk turned into my bed (www.hiddenbed.com) for years. It was an economic necessity, and now it isn’t. I sure love having a separate office… I can even close the door on it.

But I got to wondering… Where do you write? Tell us about it.

Right now, I’m living in my mom’s basement. (Somewhat sad for someone who’s 25.) Anyway, since the basement is so cold and…basement-y, I work on the kitchen table.

I, for one, do write in my bedroom and I love it. The advantage I have is that my bedroom has an adjacent dressing area which I repurposed into the office space. My desk sits under a slanted roof with a built in skylight, so I can tilt open the window anytime I want for a hit of oxygen or to listen to the birds sing. My back is also to our bed, so I really have no idea that I am actually in a bedroom. My workspace is also strewn with things I love to surround myself with: plants, nifty rocks I picked up at the beach, shells and pictures of people I love. A find that these personal touches make a huge difference. I consider myself so lucky to have such a great place to write!

Until last week I used have a desk in my bedroom and I had no difficulty working there..now the desk has been banished to the rubbish heap and my lap top and me are now perched in the living room..thats NY city living and working for you…

Trisha, I don’t know, your folk’s basement does give you the opportunity to keep expenses low… consider it good judgment on your part.

Britt, your work space sounds wonderful - a sky light!

anjeeta, will you get another desk?

  5. I’ve got a fantastic home office, but sometimes I can’t stand the isolation. I frequently head across the street to my favorite coffee shop. The ergonomics suck, but at least I see humans.

I’m also tucked away in the basement in a “real” office. But like Beth I feel so isolated. Many days I’ll come upstairs after hours working and be shocked to see the sun and I get down about having been in my “cave” (as my kids call it!). Up until a few months ago I was publishing a newspaper so i had constant contact with the outside world…now I’ve returned to copywriting with limited contact. I find I’m becoming depressed - lonely. I think I’m going to do like Beth and head for a coffee shop or even the library.

You need breaks and natural light!
