Tired of Whistling While You Work? Win an iPod Shuffle from Biz Chicks Rule!

That’s right, girls, I’m giving away an iPod shuffle to one lucky Biz Chicks Rule reader.

ipod shuffle free contest giveaway winMusic helps me get through the workday, and I’m lucky enough to be able to work on my own computer in my own office, where I can have as many music files as I want and crank the volume as high as I like. Sadly, not everyone is so lucky. And since I have an unopened iPod shuffle just lying around, I feel it is my duty to spread music to the working world.

So! Here’s how it works:

  1. Visit your favorite women’s business blog Biz Chicks Rule and locate the contest post. (You’re already here — good job!)
  2. Leave a comment stating your favorite song, band, or album to listen to while working and why it’s/they’re your favorite by the deadline of 11:59 pm ET on Sunday, July 13, 2008.
  3. Each comment will be assigned a number in order and I will enter the numbers into the sequence randomizer at Random.org to select a winner. The first eligible comment in the sequence will be the winner. Trackbacks, duplicates, my and Bridget’s comments, and comments where people did not follow the directions are NOT eligible. Everyone else, including other b5 bloggers will be eligible.
  4. I’ll announce the winner in a post and via e-mail on July 15.

IMPORTANT RULES

  1. Winners must be US residents. You can share your favorite music if you’re outside the US, but I will not ship the iPod Shuffle outside of the United States, even if you offer to pay me back for postage. Not happening. US only. If you are outside the US and are commenting just for fun, PLEASE say in your comment that you are not entering the contest. It will save a lot of trouble.
  2. You must provide your real e-mail address in the comment form. If you don’t give your real e-mail address in the e-mail field, I can’t notify you of your prize.
  3. You must follow the directions. In other words, if you don’t say your favorite song/band/album for work, you are not eligible. "I want to win!" does not count. No exceptions. I’ll approve your comment so we can all laugh at you, but you will not win even if your number comes up.
  4. You do not have to be a Biz Chick to win. Yes, Biz Dudes are also eligible. No gender discrimination here!
  5. You must be willing to provide your full name and mailing address within 48 hours of notification if you win. If I don’t hear back from you in 48 hours, I’ll pick another winner and you are out of luck.
  6. Only one entry per person. And yes, I do check IP addresses.

I’ll go first. I can do mindless work to any music, but if I’m concentrating, it has to be music I know really, really well or I get distracted listening to the lyrics. Here’s what’s on my must-stay-focused playlist right now:

  • Every Live album to date
  • Every Counting Crows album but the newest one, which I have yet to purchase because I’m working on this new self-control thing
  • Dashboard Confessional - The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most
  • Alison Krauss & Union Station - So Long, So Wrong
  • Colin Raye - Extremes
  • Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklight
  • Dixie Chicks - Wide Open Spaces

Your turn!

  1. Kendra says:

So no one can judge or make fun but… Rolling Stones. I always listen to Mick and love the vibe of their music. When driving, swimming, running or just sitting. I am getting old :). Great contest Kristen!

  2. I love listening to TobyMac! He gets me pumped. Right now my two favorite songs by him are “Gone” and “Made To Love”. Another recent fave of mine is “Apologize” by Timbaland. I love that whole album, though! (So much so that I bought the CD.)

    Great contest!

  3. jennydecki says:

If no one is judging Kendra up there … I’m hoping I’ll get away with mine as well… lol

I like listening to the Beatles when I’m working. More specifically when I’m stressed I listen to Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. Yeah, the happy upbeat little ditty about a serial killer.

Sometimes I get frustrated by interesting client demands when I’m working and then it’s all “…bang bang Maxwell’s silver hammer made sure…he was dead…”

    And so perky!

Otherwise I’m a big Fall Out Boy Panic! At The Disco girl. What can I say…I dig the perky upbeat psychotic tunes :)

  4. Kyra says:

At my real job - I listen to Jack Johnson, Matt Costa, easy listening stuff.

When I do my sidework - I crank it up with some Descendents, Pennywise, Less Than Jake and Social Distortion. This music makes my brain cells sing!

  5. Karen Lynch says:

I’m a Bon Jovi fan myself … you name the album, I have it. Lost Highway, of course, has been my current favorite since it came out.

I’ve been listening to Bon Jovi since I was a 16 year old girl … he rocked my world then and still does today.

Every time I head to Yale for my treatments (the whole breast cancer thing, you know), his songs become my anthems. His words motivate me to go on when I feel myself faltering.

I’ve seen more of his concerts than I can count on both hands (sad, but true). I’ve had front row seats and nose bleed seats and surprise seats (thanks to a buddy of mine) and on July 15th I finally, finally have VIP seats!!!!!!!

Anyway, I could go on all day, but I won’t.

    Thanks for this contest Kristen!

  6. Lori says:

Oh, don’t enter me as I have an iPod already, but I’ll contribute to the discussion. :) My favorite group - U2. You just can’t get better than a group that can sing and write incredible lyrics.

    My current playlist:

    Rockstar by Nickelback
Into the Night by Santana with Chad Kroeger
Something Good This Way Comes by Jakob Dylan
Hey There, Delilah by Plain White Ts
    Halelluia by Rufus Wainwright
    Cherry Bomb by John Mellancamp
    Better Life by Keith Urban
    Anything by Rascal Flatts

  7. Lori says:

That would be anything Rascal Flatts sings, not a song called anything. :))

  8. The kind of music I listen to while I’m working largely depends on the kind of writing I’m doing. Sometimes I need to feel laid back (and maybe a bit reflective), in which case I’ll listen to Dave Matthews Band, Dandy Warhols, Muse, Civil Twilight, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Bob Dylan, and random bands and artists from the 70s.

    Great contest, Kristen!

  9. Melissa says:

    anything by Jason Aldean

  10. Two Wishes says:

Just learned of your site through My Organized Biz, and I’m really looking forward to checking it out more!

As for music, I love Springsteen and anything funky or chipper from the 60s and 70s if I’m working around the house. But if I’m working-working, the lyrics get in the way when I’m trying to think and write. So then it’s old bebop jazz. (Yeah, baby.)

  11. Candi Parrish says:

I like to listen to Have a Nice Day by Bon Jovi. It kinda helps on a bad day as it lets the anger out a little.

  12. Angela says:

I like to listen to the Eagles!

  13. Ginny says:

    I love listening to Eminem!

  14. brandy w says:

there are so many. rascal flatts, stand, me and my gang.
i’ve wanted an i pod so long. Please!!!!!!!

  15. Jean says:

I was going to say Bon Jovi too. I also love Arrowsmith, a little of GarthB, Brad Paisley, Gwen Stefani.

  16. Miranda says:

I’m quite fond of The Killers and of Oingo Boingo when I’m working. If I’m concentrating really hard, or working on something for the physics Web site I report for, I put on the Mozart or Bach to better stimulate my brain.

  17. Mama Zen says:

    Martina McBride!

  18. Susan says:

My favorite band to listen to while blogging or anytime is Green Day because it gets me pumped up and motivated.

  19. Carrie Zeiter says:

I like to listen to John Mayer, something about his voice is so relaxing!

  20. Joan says:

During the workday, I love anything from Seal, Annie Lenox, or, lately, Natasha Bettingfield.

  21. Angie says:

I like listening to Enya because the music is soothing. I also listen to a love song CD that was made for our 10th anniversary plus any reggae music or the other CD that was made for us with songs about Jamaica or the beach LOL

Thank you for the opportunity to enter.

  22. Amy says:

There’s so many! Indigo Girls, Todd Snider, Jack Ingram, Iz, Bob Dylan…a crazy combination!

  23. Kim says:

My taste in music is quite ecclectic, and I find I go through “phases”. Right now, my two favorite artists to listen to while working has to be Corrine Bailey Ray and Maroon 5, although I recently discovered David Gray and am enjoying him very much. Basically, I like music I can sing to, without really having to think about the words, while I’m working, and a tune that seems to linger in the one of the corners of my mind, to keep my other thoughts company.

  24. Debbie says:

I love Barry Manilow!!! I went to my first concert in 1977. Oh how the time flies. I was supposed to go see him again in February of this year, but my husband had a heart attack the day of the concert.

I would love to have an IPod to listen to “I write the songs” and “Beautiful Music”. Guess I’m showing my age.

  25. Kat says:

If I’m writing fiction, I need intense, emotional music, but not hard rock. Rob Thomas, Santana (especially Smooth and Into the Night), Keith Urban, Five for Fighting, Daughtry, 3 Doors Down, Travis. I currently have 4 different versions of “I Need a Hero” on my playlist. But if I’m writing non-fiction, I need something that can be enjoyable in the background but not distract me too much–and if I like the music that much, I’d rather listen to it than research!

    Kat

  26. Sandie Law says:

    Sweet deal!

I currently have a lot of punk tunes in my playlist. Rancid, Social Distortion, Ramones, The Clash, and the Buzzcocks. I need upbeat music. My favorite right now is Train in Vain by the Clash.

  27. Sara B. says:

I have a favorite album: Now You See Inside by SR-71
Hands down, favorite song is “We Used to Be Friends” by the Dandy Warhols. I never get tired of it!

  28. Sarah says:

    Great giveaway!!

Right now my current favorite is Leah Andreone, but there isn’t a particular album of hers I favor. She did just release her “Unlabeled” Demo album that I’ve been listening to more frequently. Beyond that I’m big into broadway musicals. I collect them, and have MANY favorites :D

  29. Doreen says:

I love 3 Days Grace, Tobymac and any Christian contemporary and rock music!! :) Would love to win an ipod! purposedrivenlife4you AT gmail DOT com

  30. kitty says:

    Trip-hop. Funky without being overwhelming.

  31. I love celine dion My heart will go on from Titanic movies. It just energise me and charge up.The fact is I dont like all the song from Dion but this one is special for me.I think Dion has give her heart with the song.I like it very much.
Hey buddy dont be affraid for my address.I will not ask you for the gifs outside US.I have a temporary address in Iowa city,US,but this will be needed if my number comes.Hus! Thanks and bye….

  32. Michele says:

I love listening to music with lyrics in other languages, as it is less distracting. A favorite is the “O Samba” compilation by David Byrne.

  33. Marjorie says:

    Hi, Kristen!

I don’t normally listen to music when I’m doing most of my writing, but when I write my humor columns, I pop in the self-titled Flight of the Conchords CD. Definitely puts me in the mood.

Sometimes I’ll click on Pandora.com to get some random classical music playing in the background. Otherwise, music with lyrics get too distracting, as I inevitably want to sing along!

    Cheers,
    Marjorie

  34. Gina says:

Cool! I never thought i wanted an iPod…until yesterday! Seriously. I was looking over a new Spanish curriculum that is due to arrive in a few days and I noticed it said that I could download the lessons to an iPod to work on them. COOLNESS! So, that is what I would listen to. I would learn Spanish while I work around the house or sit during soccer practices.
I would probably add in a little Casting Crowns as well since their songs truly touch the heart of God and my heart as well!
    Thanks!

  35. Shay says:

    I love Creed!

  36. Soha Molina says:

I love to listen to Muse. ANy song, any album of theirs. They ROCK.

  37. Neva says:

I work at home. I listen to talk radio when I’m doing computer work, but when I have to get up and move around, I listen to the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique. Any hip-hop, in general, keeps me moving!

  38. SJ says:

Lately I’ve been enjoying Madonna’s new CD, along with Bishop Allen, Kings of Leon, Jason Mraz, Kate Nash, Paulo Nutini, Alanis Morissette, Missy Higgins and Duffy. I have such an interest in music I listen to just about anything! It really is therapy for me!

I love to listen to Irish music when I’m working, driving, cleaning, anytime. I know all the words, so it’s not terribly distracting, but I can “tune in” when I want a respite from what I’m doing. If I have to pick a favorite album, it would be The Mkem & Clancy Collection. Great old songs!

  42. I love listening to Reggae, definitely Bob Marley and any of his songs.

Alicia Keys and my new favorite singer Amel Larrieux
I think thats how its spelled?!

I really want to win this for my hunny! He had his stolen recently! Thanks!

    jceko77@yahoo.com

  50. Rhonda.M says:

My Job is so boring I just have to listen to my favorite upbeat music in order to get through the day! The faster the music the faster I work and that makes the big boss happy so I plug into
ZZ Top or CCR “cronicle” which I was lucky enough to get front row seats and back stage passes last year and if that don’t do the trick I put in some Foreigner Double Vision which a friend gave me tickets to see coming July 15th for a great birthday gift. Now if I could mix it all up on a iPod I’d have it made~!
    Rhonda exotic1@tdstelme.net

  51. Tom Durso says:

    What a cool post, Kristen!

For me it’s about a pleasant sound, but not something so familiar that I’ll end up wanting to sing or hum along with the music instead of work. So I go with, in general, nifty-sounding female voices doing pop tunes, with lots of harmonies and jangly guitars: Rilo Kiley, Camera Obscura, The Sundays, Kirsty MacColl.

    Biz Dude Tom

  52. I have to say anything MOTOWN from the 1960s. There’s just NO WAY to pick one group because they were all so fantastic! A compilation of Motown’s greatest Hits would suit me just fine.

I have to tell you, when I was a little girl, my two neighbors and I used to put towels on our heads and pretend we were the Supremes. Many years later I would catch myself taking a trip back down memory lane when a Supremes song came on the radio while at work. If I had a towel handy, I probably would’ve performed in between breaking news!

  53. Kelli says:

Are you ready to laugh? I like things that make me want to move like Baby Got Back by Sir Mixalot, Pump up the Jam, Everybody Dance Now, and Cotton Eyed Joe. Thanks for the chance at such a great prize!

  54. Denise Davis says:

John Mayer - Waiting On The World To Change, what a jam and testimony!!!

  55. Beth Orton. I know “who the heck is she?” She is kinda alternative but puts out really soothing music. I can’t really get my alpha waves going when I work if I have anything too rock n roll. I first heard her when I lived in Scotland (she’s British I think) I couldn’t stomach anymore Enya….

  56. Andrew says:

Currently, while working I like to listen to Soho Dolls, a synthpop group I recently learned about. The reason I listen to them is because it’s new, and when I’m working I love to hear something that seems fresh and energetic.

  57. Char says:

    Kristen -

There’s two different kinds of music I like while working.

one is when you need a temporary break just to jazz you up and getting you back into thinking gear…. For those moments, I love the Village People or the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Musical CD.

And for those times when you have to buckle down and get thinking, I like to listen to Celine Dion or Barry Manilow. Hey, I’m not ashamed to say I’ve been to 5 Barry concerts.

  62. Eloise Carlson says:

I listen to so many different genres of music but when I’m up and working around the house or just want to chill out, I usually listen to Coldplay, Howie Day or U2. Coldplay is so mellow it just makes me feel better! Thanks for a great contest!

The Beatles, John Hiatt, Guy Clark, Joe Ely, The Dayton Mandolin Orchestra (okay, that one is because my husband is in the orchestra).

  64. Tisha says:

Dashboard Confessional is definitely my favorite to listen to anywhere. I love all of the albums and songs!

  65. geoff says:

Coldplay - 42, off the new record “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends”. My favorite line… “Time is so short and I’m sure there must be something more”…. That and if the last minute and a half of the song doesn’t get you moving nothing will.

  66. Lisa says:

  95. Sheila says:

My favorite album to listen to while I work is the best album ever created: Carol King’s “Tapestry.” I can sing along with it if I’m doing work that doesn’t require a lot of concentration, or play it softly if I do need to concentrate. I need a new iPod as my old died. I really enjoy walking on the trail and listening to it. Thanks

  101. A'Llyn says:

I enjoy this cheesy manufactured Russian pop band/artist called Glukoza when working. I understand only about three words per song, so I’m not distracted by the lyrics (a concern if I need to concentrate), but the music is lively and keeps my energy level up.

Also it makes me feel hip and cosmopolitan, which is so important for the modern working world. :)

  102. Mary Folkers says:

Jimmy Buffets …and the family loves to go to his concerts.

  103. Dolores Olsen says:

When I have to work I like the most rousing music I can find. Music of choice for vacuming is the “Gaither Gospal Hour” music. not particular which one but the” alpha and Omega” is one for the hard to reach spots.

All those songs, and more like them just help me to do that. We all need to get our stress out and have some fun once in a while. (:

I go back and forth on what I like best. Right now I am into Leonard Cohen. I never paid much attention to him back in the ’70’s, but after watching the documentary about him, I cannot get enough. I have downloaded about ten of his songs. Not just the more popular ‘Suzanne’ and ‘Hallelujah’ but also more obscure ones like ‘The Chelsea Hotel’. The lyrics of his songs are very powerful. My favorite one is “Everything has cracks in it; That’s how the light gets in.”

I have discovered that I really like listening to dance-ish remix music when I’m working at my desk, because it makes me swivel in my chair and that’s good for my abs. Right now I’m using the O2: Avalon Remixed CD for that! I also have the Mary, Mary self-titled CD and it’s super nice. I’m thinking of getting ZOEgirl’s Remix CD as well.
