Shutting The Door On My Writing Office

It’s been years since I’ve had a separate room for an office. That’s largely because I’ve chosen to live a fairly alternative lifestyle. For example, I spent 16 years aboard a wee houseboat in Sausalito in a community of artists and waterfront workers called Galilee Harbor. No office there, just a desk that looked out over the water.
When I moved to San Diego I lived aboard a different boat in a marina on Harbor Island in San Diego Bay. There my writing area also looked over the water. Most recently I was in a studio in the North Park community of San Diego.
Now I’ve moved to a two-bedroom cottage at the Sweetwater Zen Center in National City, which is barely 10 miles south of my old home.
Which means I have an office to do my writing in! It’s functioning now, and quite well. Oh, I need a table to sort papers on and a book case, and maybe a weeping chair. But I’ve got the basics. And one of the things I’m enjoying most about having a separate office is my ability (and willingness) to shut the door on it each evening. The door makes a nice, solid thunk, helping me to move out of work mode. It’s great.

Well I envy you, because although I have an office with a door, I have not mastered the art of leaving it with a thud. :(

I try to turn off the computer at least an hour before I call it a night. Other wise my brain continues to spin well after I crawl under the covers.
I envy your office and the door. I am in the middle of the kitchen and the two year old delights in spinning me around any chance he gets.
