RSS at work, keep up, keep your edge, stay ahead

Over on the Business Opportunities Weblog Rich presents the 4 ways to keep on your industry’s trends.  The four ways are pretty straightforward:

1. Set specific investigative times.

2. Make trend spotting part of your daily routine.

3. Persistently investigate competitors.

4. Utilize the power of the Internet.

Okay, great.  But … how?  Simple RSS.  All of these tasks can be done with an RSS reader (Bloglines is a good, free, web-based one) and some easy RSS searches you can save from Technorati, Feedster, Yahoo, IceRocket and others.  RSS searches are persistent and use the power of the Internet.  Making it part of your routine is easy.  Just fire up Bloglines in the morning and at the end of the day.  You’ll see all the news and dirt you want.  In fact I’m sure you’ll find that you can gather more information via RSS more quickly and easily than you can via e-mail or surfing the web.

For real power though, investing in an Enterprise (no not NCC-1701D) solution like Attensa or Newsgator really brings you power and flexibilty.  Craig Barnes from Attensa has a post that sums it up well.  Why RSS in the enterprise?  Simple, like Bloglines, which only checks a feed once for all subscribers, and enterprise feed server checks a feed once for all employees and then distributes it internally.

I’m a total info junkie.  I rely on my RSS feeds to get me the latest info and scoops.  Honestly, jump on the bandwagon.  I bet within a month you’ll be able to make the case to your boss why you need a centralized solution.
