Marketing YOUrself - Pricing Yourself

As a reminder, I set out this month to talk about marketing in the hiring process - Marketing YOUrself. Another component of marketing is pricing the product. Again as a review, you are the product. So if that is true, how do you go about marketing yourself to the organization.
Pricing from a marketing perspective is critical if you want to sell your product. In the hiring process it is equally critical. It is the difference between getting or taking a job and not.
Within the hiring process, pricing equates to salary. This is one of the most difficult steps for most candidates to handle in the hiring process. One of my first recommendations is that you ask yourself some very specific questions to ensure you have a clear picture of how much you are worth before negotiating with the hiring manager.
- What is the market rate for the position?
- What are you worth?
- How much do you want to make?
- How much can you live on?
Things to Remember:
1. If you are changing jobs, whether you are doing a lateral move or promoting up, make sure you are getting a raise.
2. The Benefits package should be evaluated along with the financial compensation you are being offered.
3. Remember that MONEY is not everything. If all you are looking for is more money, or if all you are working for is the money at the end of the day you may find that you are empty.
