It seems like John McCain isn’t getting too much attention right now, with all the Democratic disunity. But McCain’s already begun campaigning for the real thing, while the Democrats are still ironing out who to nominate. While they’re doing that, why don’t you and I take a look at McCain’s stance on business issues?

Among McCain’s stances listed on his campaign website are 2nd Amendment, Immigration and Education. He has listed the economy, although nothing about business in particular. But most of his economy policies would affect business owners, if he moves into the White House. They primarily focus on helping out the average American weighed down to economic troubles. Loans for homeowners, a gas tax holiday and that sort of thing. One that caught my eye, though, is a promise to cut tariffs and other controls on trade. This, along with McCain’s proposed tax cut, is a fairly classic Republican platform. I think it has a lot more potential than a gas tax holiday, no matter which party is suggesting it.

Beyond McCain’s tax plans, he wants to offer incentives to encourage companies create jobs. He also wants to create national programs for job training and targeted job transition assistance.

There are fundamental differences in the way that McCain and the Democratic candidates approach business issues. The Republican view leans towards the “cut taxes and let business owners control their own businesses” end of the spectrum, while the Democrats are closer to the “raise taxes, but use tax money to support the Small Business Administration and other programs that will help business owners.”

Which do you think will help your business the most? Please share in the comments!

I agree that there is a fundamental difference between the business “philosophy” of people like John McCain and Barak Obama.

After being in business for many years, and studying economics, I am still a believer in Adam Smith and laissez faire. I also believe that Keynesian economics, which tried to tell us that government should mess around with business, was fundamentally flawed. Maybe that’s why you don’t have many avowed Keynesians today.

I subscribe to the principles of Thomas Jefferson, who said, “That government is best which governs least,” and that is especially true for business.
