Interview Like You Don’t Need the Job

Desperation will kill you in an interview! There’s a scent to desperation that a savvy interviewer will catch the moment you open your mouth. When you walk into an interview, don’t ever let them see you sweat. You are dead in the water before you begin if the interviewer senses you are desperate for the job. So, when you walk into that interview, with the pressures of bills, food, family, economy, and anything else you can think of, walk in with CONFIDENCE!
Let me define desperation so we are all on the same page. Desperation according to Merriam-Webster is a loss of hope and surrender to despair. A state of hopelessness leading to rashness. As I stated before, desperation is palpable, it looks like fear or uncertainty. It can be the look on your face or the look in your eyes… As desperate as you may feel about your need for employment, you must eject it from your space. It can’t be something you carry with you into the conference room. CONFIDENCE about who you are and what you bring to the table is all the hiring manager should see in your eyes, or feel in your handshake.
Here are 7 Ways to Instantly Build Self-Confidence:
1. Dress Sharp - Look Good When you walk in the door for the interview!
When you don’t look good, it changes the way you carry yourself and interact with other people. Use this to your advantage by taking care of your personal appearance.
2. Walk Faster
People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people to see, and important work to do. Even if you aren’t in a hurry, you can increase your self confidence by putting some pep in your step.
3. Good Posture
By practicing good posture, you’ll automatically feel more confident. Stand up straight, keep your head up, and make eye contact. You’ll make a positive impression on others and instantly feel more alert and empowered.
4. Personal Commercial
Create a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that highlights your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud (or inside your head if you prefer) whenever you need a confidence boost.
5. Gratitude
Set aside time each day to mentally list everything you have to be grateful for. Recall your past successes, unique skills, loving relationships, and positive momentum.
6. Compliment Other People
Make an effort to compliment those around you. In the process, you’ll become well liked and build self confidence. By looking for the best in others, you indirectly bring out the best in yourself.
7. Focus on Contribution
Stop thinking about yourself and concentrate on the contribution you’re making to the rest of the world, you won’t worry as much about your own flaws. This will increase self confidence and allow you to contribute with maximum efficiency. The more you contribute to the world the more you’ll be rewarded with personal success and recognition.
Confidence will make you stand out in an interview. It communicates strength! Confidence is not cockiness. It is not a swagger and it’s not thinking “you’re the best thing since sliced bread.”
- Confidence is knowing that you are valuable
- Confidence is knowing what you don’t know and what you do
- Confidence is knowing how much you’re worth in the marketplace and asking for it
- Confidence is internal - it comes from a place within
- Confidence is trusting yourself
If you want to interview like you don’t need the job, than develop self-confidence. Develop an understanding of who you are and what you bring to an organization. Learn how to articulate who you are in such a manner that the hiring manager will “get it” about you. And if that happens, look out, the opportunity is around the corner.

Thanks Darlene for sharing the tips to increase self confidence. Would you please also answer what is the difference between these two attitudes ” I am desperate to get that dream job” and ” I am passionate to get that dream job”. Just wanted to know becoz according to my experience passion is one thing interviewers look in a candidate
Hi Shikha!
Thanks for stopping by Interview Chatter today! Please stop by again!
“I am desperate” implies that if you don’t get it the world will be over for you versus “I am passionate” speaks to a drive or energy on the inside of you as a person that compels you to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to see that dream job come to pass. If it doesn’t happen tomorrow, you are no less passionate about the dream versus, moving to a place of hopelessness because of a feeling of desperation. Let me know if that helps!
Darlene
Solid advice as always. Very strong and well needed in todays climate. I would also add one more point and ensure that people walk the line well without passing over to the area of arrogance, which sometimes happens when confidence takes on a new mission of its own. Subtle difference but closely aligned.
Hi Jason, Thanks for stopping by today. Thanks for the addition.
